I did a lot of research on alternatives, and found that “on the top” is Tempurpedic — in quality and consistency AND PRICE.
I’d decided that I needed a memory foam mattress because I have a bad hip, which hurts when I lie on it. I found myself shifting a lot at night and not sleeping well.
It’s difficult to shop purely by what you read, so I went to local furniture stores and laid on memory foam mattresses, and I found that they feel wonderful. Try it yourself before you buy!
Then I did searches on the internet, because there’s MUCH more variety there than in local stores. If you use tempur, visco, foam, memory… you’ll find that you have at least two dozen sources on the internet. I read various descriptions and compared information and warranties, then contacted them for samples. They almost all send samples of their foam, in at least 2 X 3 inch blocks, and you can compare consistency of the foam, softness, weight, etc.
I’d already received a Tempurpedic block — even though I’d already decided that I couldn’t afford a Tempurpedic mattress (and my research indicated that Tempurpedic controls their distributor prices closely and drops them if they give bargains, so I couldn’t get around their “price control”). I used that block as a guide to compare the others, since I’d laid on their bed and liked it.
There’s a considerable difference in both foam and price among the companies, and I narrowed it down to 3, then called them to discuss options and hear their advice.
The Bergad company, which both manufactures foam and imports it, has an excellent sales department (and they sleep on ISOFORM mattresses, so they can answer questions from personal experience). They explained the differences between different densities of memory foam, and which foam is best for pillows and which they’d recommend for mattresses. The foam is wonderful for couples, because if adapts to the individual, and provides the support each person needs. It also isolates you, so when you move, you don’t disturb others. I chose “somewhat firm” on the review summary but that doesn’t fully describe a temperature sensitive memory-foam mattress which adapts to you.
I’d had a 2-sided air mattress because I thought I’d like that individual flexibility, but I found that when one side is soft and the other is hard, it’s like two balloons…and one side gets higher than the other — and I really didn’t like having to work to get off my side! (that mattress cost more than the ISOFORM, and it’s been returned)
I have a queen-sized bed, and love it. The first week I honestly liked to lie there when I woke up, and just enjoy the floating feeling. I got pillows with it (notice that there’s a couple shapes and sizes in the pillows, and that does make a difference, so again — try them in a store before ordering). Bergad’s will customize your pillow for you, if you tell them what you want. They can use firmer or softer foam, and make it 3″ or 4″ thick (at least when I ordered a year ago that was true). I like the medium-sized contour pillow, with a thicker curl that fits under your neck to support your head. You can get a queen or king size too, which makes them longer as well. I don’t need the extra length, but they’re nice. I definitely think that a firm foam is nice for the mattress, but I like the softer foam for the pillows (I got a 4 pillow and 5+ mattress, and I like them)
Shipping was prompt, and I really like the terrycloth covers on both mattress and pillows (with zippers, for washing — though I’d like the mattress cover to have full-around zippers so you could just wash the top).
Everything “installed” easily, and have held up well. I highly recommend Bergad, their personnel and their products.
One side note: Bergad’s makes a memory foam mattress “kit” that you can order and assemble yourself (a 3″ top memory foam and a 5″ firm foam [non-memory base, which is what most memory foam mattresses do], with a terry cover for the whole package. It sounds easy to use, and it’s quite a bit cheaper than a pre-assembled mattress. It’s the only deal like this I’ve found.
