With so many overpriced, inferior goods being pawned off on unsuspecting consumers, it is tremendously refreshing to find a company with reliable, high-quality products and excellent customer service. That, in a nutshell, describes our experience with Imaginair and the Aerobed.
Living in a Manhattan apartment, space is limited, thus we purchased a Queen size Aerobed last fall to accommodate a house guest. Pricing for the bed ranged as high as $200 in our area, which seemed rather expensive for an air mattress, but we’d heard good reports about the quality and reliability of the product. We’ve had negative experiences with cheaper air mattresses–they may cost only $40 or $50, but they’re hard to inflate, the pumps are unreliable, and they tend to spring leaks easily.
After some comparison shopping, we purchased the Aerobed for around $150 from an online reseller. It arrived in just a few days and was everything the ads promised and more.
The pump is attached to the mattress, though you can remove it easily for cleaning. To inflate the Aerobed, you just snap the main valve closed, plug in the cord, and press and hold the button on the remote until the bed inflates to your satisfaction–this takes only around 30 seconds. It’s pretty amazing to watch the bed unfold itself and inflate. The pump is so powerful and the bed so sturdy, you can even inflate the bed with someone in it!
Unlike traditional air mattresses, the Aerobed stays inflated throughout the night, and if you want to make it a little firmer, you can just reach out and push the remote for a few seconds. The pump is not too loud, though it will probably awaken light sleepers. We have two cats, both with claws, and they haven’t managed to do any damage to this product, which again, is more than I can say for other air mattresses.
You can use standard sheets on the Aerobed, though the bed’s slick surface causes some sheets to slip off at the corners. I’ve found this to be the case mostly with inexpensive fitted sheets that may have inferior elastic. Imaginair sells slipcovers for the beds that should alleviate this problem.
When it’s time to put the bed away, you just pop the valve open and the bed quickly deflates itself–not as fast as it inflates, but fast enough, and you don’t have to sit on the bed and push the air out yourself as we’ve found with cheaper products. When the bed is flat, you fold it in thirds and roll it up. It stores neatly in an included nylon sack that takes up minimal space in a closet or under a bed.
The Aerobed is almost as comfortable as a traditional mattress and much more comfortable than most futons or convertible sofas. Not only did our guest enjoy sleeping on it, but we often roll it out on the weekends and have a slumber party in the living room. It holds two adults as comfortably as any standard mattress.
Now, a note on Imaginair’s fabulous customer service…
One morning, when rolling up our Aerobed to put it away, the plastic valve cover broke off. I was devastated, because the one-year warranty had recently expired, and I feared we were stuck with a very expensive, useless hunk of vinyl. My husband tried to fix it, and noted that the valve could be easily removed.
We visited Imaginair’s Web site (which, by the way, is very well designed and full of fabulous aero-products) on a Sunday afternoon, and wrote an e-mail to the company asking if we could purchase a replacement valve for our bed. I anticipated a lengthy wait for a reply and a hefty charge for the replacement part and shipping. We went out for a few hours and when we returned, much to our surprise and delight, there was an e-mail reply awaiting us. The company rep (Dan, yes, he actually provided his name!) was very apologetic and provided a link to a page on their Web site where we could complete a form to request a replacement valve, absolutely FREE. Even the shipping was free, via UPS Ground, and remember, our warranty had expired.
We completed the form and sent a Thank You note to Dan. Within minutes, I received a reply from Dan thanking us for our business, as well as a confirmation e-mail from the company, also apologizing for the inconvenience and promising to send the part quickly. I am pleased to report that we received the valve before the end of the week, and our Aerobed is back in action.
I am thrilled to be able to make good on my promise and recommend this company and its products to all my friends … and to everyone on the epinions site.
