I have bought 12 beds in the last 2 years (every major brand plus quite a few toppers to try to live with my purchases/mistakes). I have a bulging disc and a torn disc which just about everyone over 40 is prone to have if they have led an active life at all. I am in my mid 50’s, an avid golfer and weigh 130 lbs.
I started with a firmer bed, too hard. Overcompensated and went too soft. The saga continued. I am now the proud owner of a $5,300 Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale Joseph Abboud which resides in my guest room. Some I was able to trade, three I basically gave away.
Then I discovered the Select Comfort. After all my trouble with pillowtops, I bought the 5000 which comes with just a small foam pillowtop that can be taken out and replaced when it caves in.
To make a long story short, I love this bed. I didn’t like the “air” feel so got up after being in it for about two hours the first night and added my magnetic mattress pad which is encased in about 1″ of memory foam and my sheepskin topper and it is now the perfect bed. The toppers totally got rid of the air mattress feel but it still totally conforms to my body when I increase or lower the settings.
I lived on Vicadin for the last year. My back loves this bed. I set it at 80 to sit up and read and then lay down on my side and set it to 40 to go to sleep. There is none of the hip pain that comes with a bed that is too hard or the lower back pain that comes with a bed that is too soft. The air comes up and supports you like it was specially made for you. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bed.
I would definitely recommend this bed for anyone with any sort of back issues but add that it does need a topper to eliminate the air mattress feel. Rather than paying another $1,000 or $2,00 for their upper lines (7000 and 9000) I would buy the 5000 and add the sheepskin topper. Or you could buy just a memory foam topper and you can unzip the top of the 5000 and slip it in on top of their one layer of padding. This is a very cool feature.
My problem now is trying to make myself stay up past 7:30! Hope this helps someone else from making all the mistakes I did. Definitely give this bed a try FIRST. It his hands down superior to any innerspring mattress on the market.
