I tend to over-research everything. When I was looking for a new bed, I knew that I wanted certain features such as an adjustable bed that was “split” meaning that as a two person bed each side can be adjusted separately. I also wanted and odd size (at least odd here on the east coast). I wanted a king size bed, but a “California king”, which is wider than a queen size bed, but narrower than a just plain “king sized” bed (also called an “eastern” king). The California king size beds are also 4″ longer than than a plain king sized bed.
When I looked into adjustable beds, it appeared quickly that there were a handful of manufacturers that make the adjustable bases, but then these bases are “dressed up” differently and sold under different names. The bases used by comfort direct appear to be well made. They have a “wall hugger” feature that moves the bed closer to the wall as the head is elevated. This makes it easier to reach items on a night stand.
As stated I ordered a “split California King” with an adjustable base. This consists of two separate adjustable bases and two “SAM” mattresses. Each base comes with it’s own wireless remote control to adjust each side separately.
The adjustable bases also have a built-in massage feature. It’s pretty nice but I viewed it more as a gimmick than a true feature that I really wanted to use.
One nice feature is that the remote controls each have three pre-programed positions along with one “custom” memory that you can set.
I really like the adjustabilty because I have a very bad sleep apnea… and sleeping in a more up-right position helps me sleep better.
My wife likes sitting up too. She often watches TV in bed or does some paper work, and the adjustable part is a real plus. Having each side be separately adjustable is great because my wife sleeps with the bed level, while I don’t.
One other plus of having a “split” bed, is that my wife doesn’t feel it when I toss and turn at night. She’s more isolated from my movements which helps her because she is a light sleeper.
Now onto the mattresses themselves (I have two, because it is a “split”). I like them… and so does my wife. they are comfortable and conform well to both of our body weights. I weigh about 250 lbs and my wife weights about 100.
The bed is firm but supportive. As they state on the web site I don’t notice pressure points while resting on it. The “wool topper” is really very nice. It reminds me of a sheerling cover — think of it as almost like a medium weight sheep skin cover like the ones for car seats, only it comes with the bed and is zipped onto the mattress as part of the bed.
The mattresses came pre-assembled each in its own box. I didn’t see exactly how the bases where shipped, because I paid for set-up as part of delivery and I didn’t pay attention to the packaging as the delivery people were setting up the bed for me.
My sales experience was fine. I had done enough research that I knew that I wanted the product, and I had gotten over the sticker shock of spending more than $4,000 for a new bed! (The split California King with separate adjustable bases is THE most expensive option. Period.) I felt that the sales people really try to persuade you into making a sale. They were very pleasant and helpful, but if you are “on the fence” then you may find that they are very good at talking you into the sale. I had already made up my mind before I called, so the sales pitch wasn’t an issue for me — I wanted to place an order and I knew it.
I have had the bed for about 7 months now, I can honestly say that I am truly thrilled with it. I had NOT discovered the (negative) reviews on this web site until the day AFTER I ordered the bed, so reading all of the negative reviews did give me a lot of angst, and I even considered canceling my order.
In the end I didn’t cancel the order and I, personally, am glad that I didn’t. For what it is worth, after carefully reading and re-reading and re-re-reading ALL of the reviews on the bed, here was and still is my conclusion.
It seems that some people absolutely love the bed, some think it’s OK but they probably had higher expectations or expected a true “miracle” given the hype and the price of the bed, and some people generally don’t care for it.
After reading the reviews very carefully, it appears to me that comfort direct tries very hard to convince people to buy the bed or at least “try it”. It seems that after the bed has been sold and delivered, if you don’t like the product it appears that Comfort Direct will try very hard to correct any problems or make changes to make you happy, but it seems that they are very, very, very reluctant to actually accept a return and refund your money.
Read the other reviews and you might agree. There are several people who spoke of Comfort Direct sending them a different type of foam, or offering to switch the internals to an inflatable system with a pump. It did appear to me (based on the other reviews) that it is very hard to get your money back.
So here was my thinking… and what I would suggest to you… if you think that you want the mattress then consider buying it. I like it, my wife likes it and several other people who reviewed it like it. If you get it and don’t like it, try talking to comfort direct to see what you can do… but I (personally) wouldn’t expect to get my money back… it sounds to me that despite any claims about returns, that once you receive the product it appears from the reviews on this site that comfort direct is likely to stand behind the product, address problems and even make changes if you ask them to… as long as they get to keep your money and you don’t want to return the bed for a refund.
Make no mistake about it. This is NOT the cheapest mattress that you can buy. On the contrary, it is a premium product that is expensive, although it is less expensive than some other premium products such as the temperpedic mattresses or the “comfort select” air mattresses. If, for the price, you expect this bed (or many of the other ultra-premium mattresses) to be absolutely, amazingly incredible and much, much, much better than a traditional mattress that might cost about half as much, and if the money is one of your primary considerations, then it’s hard to tell if you will be satisfied with this or any other “premium”, very expensive bed. But if you recognize that at the end of the day you are still only buying a bed, and that the bed may or may not help cure all of your ills, and you are willing to live with either result, then I would say go for it.
For me, personally, I am very glad that my wife and I did not cancel our order. We love the bed and are thankful that we didn’t have any problems and did not dislike the bed or (even worse) try to return it for a refund.
Good luck, whatever your choice. I hope that you are happy either way.
