I Had To Send It Back….Bummer Comfortaire Cerulean Mattress

I suppose I’ll give some back up about myself and my choices before I go into what happened. I know some people hate this, but I do think it’s important to know what my tastes are and how they might differ and effect the way *you* might feel about a mattress.

Despite times in my life when my family didn’t have a lot of money, my mother always felt like a good mattress was really important. She never scrimped in that area (as so many people do, I have come to find out later in life)! So, I was raised on pretty good mattresses all of my life. In fact, I have a lot of trouble when I vacation or stay at someone’s house, if they do not have a nice mattress–I can’t sleep, I can’t function well the next day. My previous mattresses have always been the traditional type–no waterbeds for us. And, I’ve always loved a really firm mattress. Since I was a teen and well into my adulthood, I have mostly owned top-of-line Simmons Beautyrest models. Not the best mattress out there, but certainly a pretty good mattress.

About 5 years ago, as a Christmas gift, my mattress-loving mother offered to buy us a new mattress for Christmas. My older one was fine, but it was starting to show some wear at 10 years old. We went to a store and purchased a Simmons Beautyrest Queen Set for approximately $1200 (sale price). It felt good in the store. I got it home and was happy with it. About 1 year into owning this mattress, I started to notice “dents” in the mattress. This is not a pillowtop and should not have had dents in it; however, it did have a foam covering surrounding the coils which is something I never had. My husband only weighs about 160 lbs and I weigh about 135 pounds so I don’t think being overweight was a factor in the “dents”. I never had a mattress do this before. I tried to flip it more often, but to no avail. Both sides were denting and it just continued to get worse. Actually my side was worse because I move very little when I sleep. Hubby is a “traveler” and he had less wear on his side. At year 6 (where I am now), I was thoroughly disgusted with the dents. While the mattress was still fairly comfortable believe it or not, the dents were getting to the point that I could feel my self now being lured into them!!! So, I started mattress shopping. As many of you reading this probably know by now, a good queen set is running close to $1500. Sure, you can go cheaper but they seem awful to me. Also, I really dislike all these big fluffy pillowtops and that seems to be the rage. I even had a mattress salesmen tell me that I was “odd” not to want a pillowtop.

So, I started getting very nervous about purchasing a traditional mattress. What if I spent $1500 and the “dents” started again. What if I got it home and hated it–none of them felt that good when I layed on them–and you certainly can’t return them. I was also hearing all those Select Comfort ads, and my boss raved about his Select Comfort. I guess I kind of ignored the fact that my boss had spent the previous 5 years sleeping on his couch because his mattress was “broken.”

One day, my daughter and I went to the mall and spent about 45 minutes in the Select Comfort store. I started with the priciest one and moved down. I found that the mattresses seemed very comfortable in the store and I felt happy with it. I decided on the Sleep Number 5000. I then came home and started doing my research. Here is where I found out about Comfortaire and Nationwide Mattress. I decided to order on line. I was very happy that I only had to pay for the top portion of my mattress (my box spring is in perfectly good condition). The Select Comfort people got kind of snotty with me when I told them I didn’t want or need their foundation. They even said that it would void the warranty if I did not buy it. Richard at Nationwide assured me that this was not a problem with Comfortaire.

So, I order. I was so excited waiting for the mattress. The dents in the Beautyrest had really ticked me off and I wanted a new mattress. It finally arrived and my husband spent about 30 minutes assembling it. I then went up to do the “adjustments”. As stated, Comfortaire does not have a “number” to figure out where you were. I really do like this feature of the “sleep number” but not sure it is worth the extra money. My instruction manual said to turn the pump on using the up arrow and when the bed was to full capacity the pump would turn off. Well, my pump never turned off. So, I turned the pump off and sat on the bed. It didn’t really feel that firm to me. I played with the pump some more and it still wouldn’t shut off. I figured my mattress must have a leak of some sort. So, I got the instructions back out and saw that if you press the “fill” button it would fill the mattress up to capacity. So, I hit the fill button and the pump ran for 3-4 minutes and then shut off. When I went back to hit the “up arrow” to fill some more to see if the pump would automatically turn off, the pump just ran continuously again. This got me a little worried. I don’t like when things don’t follow the directions. Also, the bed just didn’t feel firm to me. So, I called Richard and explained the problem. I guess the pumps have been changed recently so that consumers cannot burn the pumps out. The pump will not automatically shut off when the bed gets to capacity. Once a sensor in the pump detects the specified pounds per inch, the pump will go into a different mode, keep running, but blow the air out of the pump and not into the bed. So, how do you ever know when it is full? The “fill” button is on a timer and is designed to only run 3-4 minutes. That is how quickly the bed will fill. From set up of your bed, filling up should only take about 7-8 minutes. If your going from partially filled, it is much less time. Richard was very nice and we got that straightened out quite easily.

The first night on my bed, I was in totally firm mode (what Sleep Number would call 100). Bad move! I think I woke up every 20 minutes and felt horribly uncomfortable. But if I lowered the air, I felt as if I didn’t have enough support. At one point, I woke up and felt like I wasn’t breathing. Probably because my chest and back were pushed into an arch. I also woke up with what seemed to be horrible allergies. I think I was allergic to some dust or maybe the smell of the air chambers.

I called poor Richard to tell him of my bad night. He told me NOT to sleep with all that pressure. I took all the linens off the bed that day and gave it a thorough vacuuming. That night, I softened it up to what I think would have been at “60″ but it was then way too squishy and I became very conscious of the foam sides that border the air chambers. I really could not stand it. The foam sides bothered me and I felt that I was hanging on to them all night trying to pull myself out of a hammock. The next day I woke up with a stuffy nose again AND a sore neck.

The next night I firmed it up a bit but I was still feeling those foam sides. After 3 bad nights of sleep my nerves were shot, I looked horrible, and my neck was killing me. I decided I could not take another night of it. Just for good measure, I went back to the Select Comfort store to see if I had been “duped” by Comfortaire. I paid much more attention to the mattress then and even had a look at the inside. Except for the foam in the middle of the Select Comfort, they are indeed, quite the same. I laid on the bed again and some of these faults that I was detecting after sleeping on the Comfortaire were now more apparent to me in the Select Comfort store. I guess that one should not go mattress shopping after they have been clothes shopping for 3 hours. ANYTHING will feel good.

Returning the Comfortaire was very easy. I called Richard to tell him what I wanted to do. He did tell me that I didn’t give the mattress enough time, but he also didn’t give me a hard time. He gave me a return code number to use on my UPS label. My husband said the mattress went back into the 2 boxes just fine (haven’t heard this about Select Comfort). I spent about $70 to have it UPS’d back to Richard. He sent me an e-mail as soon as he received it and I had my refund within about 4 days. GREAT service. If you want to buy this mattress, get it from him. Save your money and don’t go to a dealer and CERTAINLY don’t spend double for Select Comfort. It is the SAME mattress.

I can’t explain why some people love this mattress so much. I’ve had people argue with me on it. I do know that many people I know bought the Select Comfort after coming off a waterbed or a very bad bed to begin with. I don’t know if my “mattress snobbery” has something to do with my dislike for it. But I do know that I was very disappointed and really WANTED to love this mattress. As for my husband, he said it was “fine”. He also said that he has slept on a TABLE before and that didn’t bother him either. He’s not too picky. He did say that he didn’t see what all the fuss was over this technology. It felt just like air chambers to him and nothing special.

I’m back on my old mattress now–you know, the dented one. It felt like absolute heaven that first night back on it. Right now I’m too afraid to buy a new mattress.
