Rhapsody bed, so far, so good! Tempur Pedic Swedish Mattress It's been a week since my husband and I received our king size Rhapsody set. First, I must say, this...
Synopsis: The mattress is comfortable and pressure relieving, but every night at 3am I wake up hot as can be. The artificial material absorbs heat slowly and releases it even more slowly, meaning at 3am, even if I get up, the bed stays hot. This is my sole complaint. But it is a deal breaker. Do not waste your money.
Okay, now that I have covered the basics, let me start at the beginning. First, the idea of having a super-comfortable bed appeals to me. And I am the kind of consumer who will pay for quality. I had seen Tempurpedics for years in Sharper Image, but had never really considered getting one. Then, I admit it, okay? I saw a commercial one Sunday morning. I am the last person to go for an infomercial, but I thought the advertisement made some good points. First, you do (hopefully) spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Second, the idea of a mattress that did not have to be flipped seemed great. Am I the only one who used to swear when I first purchased my boxspring mattress that I would flip my religiously, and then did so like clockwork - every two years? Third, the knock on the old school western technology of the boxspring mattress rang true. Didn’t the more enlightened people of the East sleep on Futons (cotton and foam)? Fourth, the pressure point argument - supported by scientific studies supposedly - the idea that people toss and turn much more on conventional mattresses than Tempurpedics. I thought it seemed reasonable that less tossing and turning would equate to a better nights sleep and more productive days. I think somewhere I even read that 6 hours on a Tempurpedic was equal to 7 hours on a regular mattress. (I read a review, I believe through a link on the official Tempurpedic website, where a surgeon swore by the mattress, saying he got great sleep in less time on it.)
This all sounded great and seemed plausible enough. I am always looking for innovative products, and I was about sold. Then on the commercial they brought out the steam roller and rolled over the mattress to show its resiliency, and as the mattress recovered its shape instantly and with no ill effects, I was asking where to buy it.
I wound up at Relax the Back, and the saleslady there told me she had made the mistake of buying an airbed (also sold by Relax the Back), and wished now that she had purchased a Tempurpedic. So I paid $2100 with tax and had it delivered.
Let me now tell you the good points of this mattress, because there are good points. It is amazingly comfortable. I still love the feeling when I first climb on the mattress. No hard spots, no squeaks, and yet, there is an appropriate level of firmness. I think the pillows are excellent. They support your head, and after a while, you can’t even feel them. So maybe this is what they mean by the sleeping on a cloud effect. I would say that effect does exist, and for the mattress as well. Regarding wear and tear, the mattress has held up great over the past 5 years, with no flipping whatsoever. I would give it 5 stars in this category.
The sole problem is the heat trap effect. Much has been written about this, but you have to experience it to appreciate it. Have you ever turned your pillow over after laying on it for a while, because you want the cool side? This bed is kind of the opposite of that. It is a slow process. Usually I fall asleep about 10am. I will wake up at two to three o’clock hot. I usually get out of bed. But the bed changes temperature slowly so it is still hot when I return. I have had company, and they have also told me the bed is hot. With two people, the effect is of course compounded.
I set the air conditioning on 64 degrees and I run a high quality vornado fan, and I still get hot. I’m pretty convinced, as I keep lowering my thermostat over time to new lows, that it doesn’t really matter how cold the room is, the heat is generated after several hours between your body and the mattress, an area unaffected by the room’s temperature.
I like the mattress, so I even took additional steps. I bought a cotton mattress pad. That did not help. Then, I added on top of this wool mattress pad. I did some research, and found out that contrary to what one might think wool is known as a heat dispensing agent in hot conditions, and thought this might help. If you doubt me on this, take a few minutes and research wool bedding. And I have followed the advice from Temperpedic’s customer research department and removed the mattress cover. I do think this helped a little bit. But the result has been the same, the bed still slowly heats up to the point where it wakes me up in the middle of the night.
I guess to look on the bright side, it helps me wake up early now, so I get up and do yoga at a very early hour. But that was not the idea of the mattress when I bought it! I already have an alarm clock.
There were warning signs. First, commonsense should have told me to be extra careful because of the synthetic nature of the material. Is polyester as cool or as comfortable as cotton? Do plastic or vinyl type shoes breath as well as leather? Of course not.
Then read the reviews, they indicate repeated concern in this area. Talk to mattress salespeople that sell a variety of products, not just Tempurpedic. They will invariably tell you they get a lot of returns of memory foam mattresses (not only Temperpedic) based solely on heat retention.
The other warning sign was the gimmicky, overdone marketing campaign. Yes, the mattresses feel incredible in the store (no time for heat to build up). But, if they were really that good they would be going like hotcakes from word of mouth. Have you ever seen a mattress more advertised and marketed? I feel sorry for the landfills in America, they are going be full of Tempurpedic mattresses I predict.
Overall, I would put this product in the fatal flaw category.
Finally, because it is relevant, I should mention I recently had a physical and am in very good health. I am also not especially hot blooded, I actually get cold fairly easily.
