We have owned and slept on a Strobel Supple Pedic Mattress 4500 since 2001. We bought it as a lower cost alternative to the other visco foam mattresses on the market. We paid $1400 for a queen sized mattress.
This is generally a comfortable bed, all the press about great support is true, but one problem must be noted. This mattress has a problem with terrible heat buildup.
During these winter nights (we live in Maine) we allow our house temperature to drop from the mid-60’s at bedtime to the upper 50’s throughout the night. Not until 6 AM does the house heat come back on and raise the temperature in the house back into the 60’s. So we keep a fairly cool house. Unfortunately by morning the bed is broiling.
When we get into the bed at night the mattress seems to be freezing cold - like laying on a bed of snow. Much later our body heat begins to accumulate in the visco foam which traps the heat. By the early morning hours it feels like we are sleeping in a frying pan and many times I have woke up in a full sweat.
My wife does not like the bed because of this problem. She travels frequently and claims to get a better night’s sleep in a good hotel bed.
We have experimented with different combinations of sheets and blankets but the excessive heat buildup is not affected by the sheets or blankets. Body heat is trapped in the visco foam and the depression your body makes becomes a boiling pit.
Shortly after receiving the mattress I complained to the manufacturer about the heat buildup problem but never received a reply.
On a hot summer night (we don’t have or need air conditioning) the bed is unusable.
I have read that the manufacturer of the more expensive visco foam mattress uses a secret combination of ingredients in the production of their mattress that eliminates the problem of heat buildup. I would love to hear from others to learn if this is true.
The lever/spring gimmick doesn’t seem to do much except fill space in the mattress bag/cover. The mattress comes in three parts - the visco foam, the thin section of lever/springs, and another block of cheap foam. You zip these three sections together into the mattress bag to form the mattress that is placed on a box spring platform. Since they are not connected in any way it is not unusual to have one section of the mattress slip to the side some and the mattress then looks like it is misformed sitting on your bed (not the square corner straight side shape you would expect from a quality mattress).
We have learned to live with the unusual look and shape of the mattress but the heat problem continues to bother us. Unless the heat buildup problem is solved I cannot recommend this mattress.
