A few years ago, I went to England to visit my fiance for two weeks. I was meeting his family for the first time, and staying in his parents’ home, which was also where he was living at the time. They didn’t have a guest room, and his room only had a single bed in it, so I planned to buy a portable, inflatable mattress and bring it with me to sleep on during my trip.
I did some research online and found that the Aero Twin Minute Sport Bed suited my needs the best. It was the right size (74″L x 39″W), the right weight (only 8lb), the right price ($75), and used a cordless, rechargeable NiCD pump. This last feature was especially important because I didn’t want to have to worry about voltage conversion and plug adapters, etc.
However, I was concerned that if I charged the pump the night before my trip, would it stay charged for the entire two weeks I’d be in England? The pump is not dual-voltage, so the charge would have to last my entire trip. I didn’t want to get over there, use the pump once or twice, and then suddenly discover it needed recharging with no way to do so.
So I emailed Aero Products International’s customer service and asked. They responded very quickly and assured me that the pump’s charge would last the two weeks without needing to be recharged, and possibly even longer depending on how frequently I used it. The more you use it, the more the charge is drained — sort of like a battery, in a sense. This raised a new question, though: Since I had never used an Aero Bed (or any inflatable mattress) before, I didn’t know how frequently I would need to use the pump to fill up the mattress. Once a week? Every day?
I emailed Aero again and asked. Again they responded quickly and addressed my question as best they could. Ultimately there’s no specific number of times a person will definitely pump up their Aero Bed, but they said I probably wouldn’t need to do so more than 2-3 times a week. That response was satisfactory enough for me to go ahead and buy the Aero Bed Twin Minute Sport.
Here are Aero Twin Sport Minute bed specs as published on the manufacturers website, along with my related comments:
74L x 39W x 8H This is the same as a standard regular twin mattress
Coil construction for maximum support and comfort The mattress IS strong. We walked on top of it several times and it held up very well.
16-gauge rayon flocked top is puncture-resistant, non-allergenic, and is electronically welded at the seams
Plush sleep surface keeps bedding in place I really do like the surface; it feels suede-like, very soft.
Powerful, rechargeable NiCD pump for hands-free, 60 second inflation I found the pump did just that. Also, the pump is worth about $30 on its own but comes free with this mattress, so getting the Aero Twin Sport Minute at $75-$80 is a real steal, since you can use the pump repeatedly. The pump can also be used indoors AND outdoors. It can be a little tricky the first time you use it, but with practice and paying attention to the owners manual, youll get used to it in no time.
Built-in 9″ pillow The pillow is not really a pillow at all, just more like a slightly raised bump at the head of the mattress. If you arent someone who can sleep without a pillow, then you are best off bringing an actual pillow along.
Duffle bag included A great feature, as you can keep all the parts and manual in one place and simply sling the bag over your shoulder for carrying, or put it in your luggage or even bring as a carry-on bag. The bags material is pretty flimsy, though, so be warned.
Patch Kit One of my brothers kids managed to poke a hole in my mattress somehow, but we used the patch kit to fix it and its good as new; I havent had any problems with it since.
1 year limited warranty
So, what happened when I took this mattress to England?
Well, I followed the owners manual and charged the pump for a full 24 hours the day before I went on my trip. (Subsequent recharges take 12 hours.) I tested it before packing everything and it worked flawlessly it really did inflate in about a minute! I packed everything in the Aero duffle bag, as well as printed out instructions to the baggage inspectors about what the pump was and how to use it if they needed to make sure it wasnt a bomb or something. (Hey, you never know, right?)
About 24 hours after Id finished charging the pump, I used it again to inflate the mattress, this time so that I could actually sleep on it. I inflated it as much as I could and everything went great, although the mattress was a tad too hard for me and I found it slightly uncomfortable. It was the same way the second night, but by the third night the inflation had begun to soften a little bit and it was much more comfortable for me.
I didnt have to pump the mattress up again until the 6th day of my trip! And guess what? The charger worked as well on the 6th day as it had right after Id charged it. I pumped the mattress up at least one more time, possible two, before I left England. The mattress never went entirely flat it just lost a little bit more air each night. The charger held up the entire time. I didnt use it again until about 7 months later so unfortunately I cant say how long that initial charge lasted. However, I was just really happy that the charge lasted for the duration of my trip and I didnt have to worry about my sleeping arrangements!
We are now married and living in the States, and are going back to England to see my husbands family for the first time in five years. Ill be bringing my Aero Twin Minute Sport, just in case I know it will work great!
