Please note: This review is for the 11 series Sealy Posturpedic True Form Mattress. I cannot speak to the 8 series and I was told by a sales rep that they have now discontinued the 9 series.
This is a great mattress. I have read pretty mixed reviews about Tempurpedic-style mattresses, including this one, but I have friends with the Sealy and they had a very positive experience. It seems like most of the bad reviews have to do with the mattress being too firm. There seems to be some potential issues with Sealy shipping the mattress upside down in its cover, which would seem to pose a problem with firmness. Please ensure that this is not the case if you purchase or have purchased this mattress. I enjoy a somewhat firm mattress, and I thought maybe this was creating a biased opinion on this issue. However, my girlfriend does not care for firm mattresses and she loves this as much as I do; she recognizes that it is not as soft as the model we experienced in the show room (no bed or similar piece of furniture is as soft and broken-in as it was in the showroon, however, so keep this in mind) but she has no problems with the mattress. We are both incredibly happy.
I suffer from pretty severe shoulder and back pain, I have since I was a kid (I’m 26 now). About 8 months ago I began experiencing hip pain as well. After several adjustments to how I sleep and going crazy trying to figure out why I was experiencing this new pain, I realized that it was our spring mattress, a Serta Pillow Top (I can’t remember the model exactly) that was less than one year old when I began having the hip pain. After spending a few nights over the holidays (December 06) on a spring mattress with a visco elastic top and waking up pain free for the first time in months (shoulder and back pain were improved, hip pain was finally gone), I realized we had to get a new mattress, either 100% visco elastic or at minimum a spring model with a thick visco elastic top.
We chose the Sealy 11 Series because if felt great in the showroom and the particular furniture store we bought it from (Room Source) was having an excellent sale. It was on sale for 1700 and and extra 200 was knocked off by the salesperson because Room Source is the largest dealer of Sealy in California. If you want this mattress, seriously consider this store if one is in reasonable distance. The high-end retail for this unit is 2200, with low-end retail about 1900-2000. 1700 is a pretty common sale price online, but I have no idea what you would pay for long distance shipping. This mattress is heavy and considering that the set comes with a boxspring and frame, this method could prove quite pricey. From my local store, delivery and set-up were free, as they usually are at local furniture stores.
Overall, after 6 months of use, this is an outstanding mattress. Don’t worry about the smell that everyone mentions, it’s weird at first but you get used to it and now it’s completely gone. I received a Sealy Bed Bundle for free, with deep-pocket sheets and visco elastic pillows. You will need the deep pocket sheets, I bought some back-up deep pocket sheets that were on sale and those happen to be Sealy brand as well. We tried using non-deep pocket, regular queen sized sheets as back-ups and it about drove us insane, the mattress is far too thick for this. My shoulder/back pain is much improved, my hip pain is a thing of the past, and my girlfriend is experiencing a complete lack of pain (though she admittedly had only a small amount of pain before). I truly can’t feel her get up to go to the bathroom at night and I’m not disturbed when she wakes up before me. It’s been quite a shock to wake up to an empty bed and hear her out in the living room from time to time…this never happened in years past! She used to wake me up every time she rolled over! 1500, as great a price as it is, is still a lot of money for us, as I’m sure it is for most people, but it was well worth it. I have heard that these things break down somewhere between 1-3 years but for 90 dollars we bought a warranty that covers that specifically (amongst other things) so I will update this if things change.
