My girlfriend and I recently decided to upgrade our full size innerspring mattress to something larger and more comfortable. We have friends who own a sleep number 5000 and found it to be very comfortable so we decided to buy one. We went to the store to look at the different beds and try them out. The salesman greeted us quickly and helped us find our sleep number. We decided we liked the Eastern King 5000. The price was around $2300 but if you know someone who is already an owner and they purchase it, you could get 15% off. Still, the price was a bit high.
We had heard that Select Comfort sells “refurbished beds” at a discounted price only through their 1 800 number. These beds are either customer returns from the 30-night trial period or beds returned from their stores. I called the number to inquire and they quoted me a price of $1600 for the king matress, foundation, optional legs with headboard mounts, and $50 for shipping. This price was $ 400 less than the retail price minus the bonus 15%. The woman said the 15% didn’t apply to this sale and that price is the price employees pay. The refurbished beds do come with the full 20 year warranty but do not include a 30-night trial.
I went ahead and ordered the bed and she said it could take up to 3 weeks to deliver. I thought that was a little odd, but whatever. It did take about 2 weeks to get the bed and it came in 6 boxes. After unpacking the boxes, I started to put the whole thing together myself. All the parts are labeled and correspond to the labeling in the instruction booklet. The instructions are easy to follow and thorough. The instructions say it takes about an hour to put the bed together, but it took me about 1.5-2 hours. I think this is because it was my first time and also I was putting together the king which includes (2)twin-sized foundations that are put together separately.
Other reviews say the plastic parts are cheap. They are all plastic, except the bolts to hold the legs together, and each piece alone may feel cheap and you may not think it will hold everything up. However, once you get it all put together, it is very sturdy and lightweight. A lot of people say the parts are hard to slide together. They are!! However, if you use a little lubricant, I used KY liquid because it is water-based and won’t make a mess of the carpet like vaseline will, the parts go together effortlessly.
The foundation is very quiet. No more squeaky noises from a metal bedframe. The first time we put weight on it, we heard the foundation settle a little. The instructions say to make sure all the pieces are flush. I guess mine were not totally flush. After that, we haven’t heard a squeak.
You can use the foundation on a regular bed frame or you can purchase a set of legs from Select Comfort. New legs run $ 120 for the king but we got a set of refurb for $89, which was included in the $1600 price tag. This lifts the bed off the ground for underneath storage as well as making moving and transporting the foundation easier since it is all one piece. No more bedframe to lug around.
Once the foundation was put together, it was smooth sailing from there. The matress, air bladders, foam supports and pillowtop went together effortlessly. This is the part that took the least amount of time. As I said, we ordered the 5000 and were expecting a 5000 comfort system (air pump). Much to my surprise, we received an upgrade to the 7000 at no charge. I’m not sure what the difference is except the remotes we received had two extra buttons. One for a memory setting and one for ‘fill’.
The comfort system is very quiet when you adjust your number. You only hear a small click and a faint pumping noise if you are filling the bed. It is barely noticeable and won’t wake anyone up in the middle of the night.
So far we are happy with our bed. It does take a couple of nights to get used to, but it is very comfortable and well made. The 20 year warranty is also a plus, although it is pro-rated like auto tire warranties are. For the first two years, it is covered 100%. After that, you pay a flat % plus 4% for every year after the 2 of the price of the part.
