I have the 5000 model extended queen sized bed. Seemed great in the store, but actually sleeping on it (as opposed to laying on it for 10 minutes) was a much different.
First, let me comment on the installation. I was flabbergasted when I saw them put the bed together. I couldn’t believe how cheap the pieces of this bed looked. It’s just two flimsy rubber blow-up air chambers enclosed in a bed frame that consists of a hard plastic bottom and a thin foam top with a thicker foam wall separating the two sides of the bed. The materials to build just the mattress itself couldn’t have gone for more than $100 bucks. I kept thinking to myself, “why did I just spend $2000 for this”. I think I’m in the wrong business.
Anyway, the reason my wife and I bought this mattress in the first place is because the spring mattress wasn’t cutting it. I’m newly married and I never had problems with a mattress until I started having to sleep on one with another person. Then, all of a sudden, back pain city. Every morning, I was waking up with shoulder and back pain.
So, we had to do something about this and the sleep number bed is what we did.
Long story short, things didn’t get worse, but they didn’t get any better either. It turned out to be no magical cure for pain. It’s just a glorified air mattress where you can control the air pressure inside the flimsy rubber air chamber with a sleek looking peanut shaped controller. This is the same exact air mattress that you would use on your floor when guests come over to stay.. the only difference is that you have an electric pump to blow it up instead of using a hand pump, and perhaps a foam top to hide the fact that it’s air you’re sleeping on.
As with all air mattresses, when you push down firmly on one side of it, the air you just displaced becomes evenly disbursed throughout the rest of the mattress. For instance, when you roll over, the pressure your body exerts on one side of the mattress will cause the side you just rolled over from to rise and this gives you a feeling of unevenness, like the mattress is trying to dump you into the middle of the bed. Springs won’t do that.
For what it’s worth: I have noticed, after talking with friends who also have this mattress, that women seem to love it and men seem to not like it as much. Women also seem to enjoy the lower sleep numbers (25-40) and my male friends seem to use much higher numbers (70-100). This I cannot explain, but I can agree with it.
The only thing I can say is that I’m a side sleeper and I continue to stay up tossing and turning and waking up with a backache in the morning. During the day, I’ve felt like a walking zombie for the past two months. My wife says it’s supposed to take a while for your back to get used to it… she heard that from the salesperson and saw it in the instruction manual– that’s a crock. That fact is, this bed suffers from all the same problems that a waterbed suffers from, and also causes all the same problems that a waterbed would cause (is it any wonder that nobody uses waterbeds anymore). It’s just a fad.. Save your money.
