I, too, bought a queen-sized King Koil Perfect Contour 5000 from Winchendon Furniture in 2000 (delivered without the warranty card); then I promptly moved half way across the country.
My first 2 weeks on the mattress were a soft, fluffy heaven. After that it was downhill - particularly in the middle. It was like sleeping in a hammock it was so sunken in the center. I turned it top to bottom and flipped it over, to no avail. (Excellent exercise for a 5′2″ single person.)
I contacted King Koil who just referred me to a local manufacturer. The local mfgr said I would have to transport the mattress upstate to their factory (like it almost fit in a manilla envelope)for them to take a look at it. I asked if they had any local representatives that could come and examine it because I had no way of transporting a mattress set to them just to look at it. I was recently widowed and newly relocated to an area where I had no friends or family and drove a Jeep that could hardly accommodate a Queen-sized mattress. Their response was simply no.
I have since learned that the mattress should have been supplied with a bed frame that included a center brace. (Winchendon gave me a basic 4-rail frame with the mattress set.)I bought a good steel center-braced frame, but it didn’t help. The problem is the mattress.
Three years later I am still on the same mattress. I simply can’t afford another $1000+ to replace it. I get a decent night’s sleep on it, but it is so sunken it’s hard to roll over, it looks awful and it’s hard to climb out of. I feel like a dog nesting in a swirl of old blankets.
Mostly I resent the fact that I invested $1000 in a bed I thought was superior, and got what I consider a defective product and terrible service from both Winchendon and King Koil.
Would I buy another King Koil? Never. They do not stand behind their products; all they do is license their name to independent manufacturers around the country. From there you are on your own.
The world of mattresses is pretty shadowy. Mattress people seem to be full of hype but do everything they can to keep consumers from really understanding what they are buying (or from comparing prices on like products). I’ve spoken to a number of salesmen and few of them really know much about mattress construction beyond what you can learn in a simple brochure. For that matter, what’s important for the consumer is not the construction anyway, but the performance.
You are told to try out mattresses to find one that’s comfortable. What I’ve also learned is that a lot of really comfortable mattresses do not hold up well.
After doing a good amount of research, I will only buy Sealy in the future. And I will make darn sure I get a decent frame and a warranty card.
