Great Bed!! Comfortaire Celenia Mattress I have been sleeping on a Comfortaire Celenia for close to two years now and It has been a worthy inv...
I did a lot of research on air beds before purchasing a Celenia. My wife and I have talked about it for the last year or so, but when she started having back problems we thought it would be a good time to make the switch.
We solicited a lot of opinions, from this site and from friends who had made the switch to air beds. The consensus was pretty strong toward the air beds. We went to the local Select Comfort store and went through the whole routine of finding our “sleep number” on the 4000, then moving up to the 5000 and on to the 7000. We spent about 10 minutes lying on the 5000 while listening to the salesperson (an odd experience, lying on a bed while someone is standing there talking to you). When I got up, I could feel that my back had relaxed and was now compressing again when I stood up. I was sure that an air bed was the way to go, but didn’t want to pay for the added marketing cost of a Select Comfort bed.
I found out that Select Comfort was started by someone who originally worked at Comfortaire. Plus, Comfortaire is still around after 20+ years, which says a lot. I checked a lot of websites and ultimately found airbeddepot.com. They had also been recommended by a co-worker who bought from them. They had the lowest price by far, and Mark proved to be a valuable resource for making a decision on a bed.
We chose the Celenia in an Eastern King. The bed arrived when Mark said it would and I rushed home that day to set it up. Setup took about 20 minutes. I filled up the air chambers and started to goof around with the settings, only to find that the pressure sensor on my side of the bed wasn’t working correctly. The “whisperflo” pump certainly didn’t whisper, and the raised section on top of it is just high enough to contact the underside of a box spring when used with a standard bed frame. As a result, the sound of the pump resonates through the bed. Not a good thing if you plan to change settings in the middle of the night.
Both of these problems were pretty minor and easily resolved. One call to Mark and he was on the phone with Comfortaire. He called back a few minutes later to tell me that a replacement pump was on the way via next-day fedex, complete with a return ticket for the bad pump. The new pump worked like a charm. The second problem will take a little more work. I’ll have to crawl under the bed and find a spot where the pump doesn’t contact any wood in the box spring, or put some small blocks under the feet of our bed frame to add more space. I would also suggest wrapping the pump with some sound dampening material (a beach towel works well). Just be sure not to cover the air intake.
All that said, I can finally talk about sleep. To be honest, I’ve really slept like crap since getting this bed. In part, I feel like I’m too warm. I’ve always been the hot one and with the visco foam and pillow top conforming to my body, I wake up quite often feeling way too hot. I haven’t been successful in finding a setting that works for me either. I also seem to be waking up at 4am, unable to get back to sleep (no, it’s not because I’m fully rested). My wife’s back is slowly improving, thanks primarily to a good chiropractor, but she still feels like she needs to put something under her back to add support in the right place. It may be unfair to say that the mattress is not helping at this point. We’ll have to see how things progress.
Overall, I would say that the purchase from airbeddepot.com was a delightful experience, even with the bad pump. Mark is a wonderful guy and eager to help in any way he can. I’ll probably call him on my problem with being too hot. The jury is still out on the bed. We’ll give it sufficient time before making any decisions, but it certainly hasn’t been the revolutionary sleep system we expected. If things change, I’ll come back in and revise or add to this review. As it stands, this baby may be on it’s way back to Comfortaire. Thankfully, there is a 60 day sleep test!
10/07/03 Update - I contacted Mark at airbeddepot.com about my problem with being too hot, and he suggested a 100% cotton mattress pad (fiber filled). Well, it just so happened that my wife had just purchased one to try out (we always use a mattress pad to protect the mattress from body oils, etc.). I put it on last night, goofed with the settings a little, and slept wonderfully, without being too hot. My advice to others considering an airbed is to give yourself some time to get used to the bed, and use a mattress pad.
01/23/04 Update - I love settling into this bed at night. We’ve had it for a few months now, and I can honestly say that I am sleeping better. I was a little annoyed at first when I would wake up before the alarm, thinking that something was wrong. But as this continued day after day, I realized that I wasn’t tired. Evidently the quality of my sleep was so much better that I didn’t need as much. I would also note that I NEVER wake up feeling twisted up, or with an aching back. My wife’s back problems persist, but it certainly isn’t the bed’s fault. She wakes up in the morning feeling much better than the night before.
If you are concerned about leaks in the tubing or a noisy pump coming on in the middle of the night, don’t worry. The pump never comes on to re-adjust the bed to our pre-set levels. Every once in a while I hit the fill button and then the pre-set level button just to feel the mattress conform to my body. I’m raising my evaluation of this bed!
