I’m So Tired…. Sealy Posturepedic Mattress A few weeks ago we decided it was time for a new mattress. We went shopping around to Strawbridges, M...

Sleep before Fonda:

Growing up I had a twin size mattress, which was so old it could have been my mother’s when she was a kid. Next, I slept on a futon, followed by a dormitory bed. After college, my hubby and I bought our first double bed with a mattress from a personal newspaper ad. The mattress was so flat and hard, we might as well have slept on our wood floor. In April 2005, we gathered up some gift money from our engagement and headed to Raymour and Flanigan for a new mattress.

Finding Fonda:

Back then, we couldn’t turn on the television without seeing someone lay on a Sealy and instantly fall asleep. We had some of the best nights sleep at my in-laws’ house where we slept on a Sealy Posturpedic. When we stepped into Raymour and Flanigan’s we were sure we wanted a Sealy Posturpedic, but did’t realize there was so many different choices.

The Raymour and Flanigan sales rep had us lay down on mattress after mattress; all Sealy and all some form of posturpedic or pillowtop. The first was a regular posturpedic, but it felt too firm. The second was a pillowtop without the posturpedic title, it was too soft. The third was a Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress and it was just right. Not too hard, not too soft; firm and comfortable. I felt like Goldilocks in the Three Bears’ house.

About Buying Fonda:

Due to the added height of the posturpedic pillowtop, this mattress is 14 inches in height. A normal box spring is 9 inches in height and the combination would mean use of a step-ladder to get to bed. A low-profile box spring is available with the Fonda Posturpedic Pillowtop that only measures 5 inches in height, meaning we don’t have to climb up to lay down. Raymour and Flanigan sold us the Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress and Boxspring for a grand total of $795.90 with delivery and set up in 3 days. Getting the two together was a special sale and at the time buying just the top mattress alone would have been about $600.

Fond of Details:

The Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress is built on a foundation of steel; the box spring acts as a shock absorber with a steel spine for added support. The Fonda has a unique unicased edge design which locks into the posturpedic innerspring; it helps absorb weight and movement while providing extended comfort. The coil system includes a gauge of 14 with posture tech coils for improved support of the users back. This construction is different from other mattress in which only the edges are supported during movement. It extends over the entire length of the bed and means I can flip myself without disrupting my hubby’s sleep.

The Fonda Mattress is made with a combination of padded layers of versare insulator, memory foam, pressure point and plush latex material, sculptured foam, supersoft Sealyfoam, and an ultra plush alignment zone covered by inner tufting.

The top mattress is cream colored and smooth to touch. There are 2 handles on each long end of the mattress to make turning the mattress easier. (Raymour and Flanigan’s suggested turning it every 2 months for even use). The pillowtop looks just like a giant pillow over a regular posturpedic mattress. The pillowtop of the Fonda has a quilted satin look and feel to it. It is made of flame guard and cashmere fibers, and a combination of convoluted foam and Sealyfoam.

Fond of Sleep:

Make:

We have had the Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress for almost 2 years now. The mattress has a thick outer layer, which is both strong and durable; already surviving one move by amateurs. The cloth handles allow for easy moving or turning of the mattress without fear of the handles ripping. There is no need to flip the mattress, just turn it 180 degrees every couple months.

Comfort:

The pillowtop gets squished down when we lay on it, but the rest of the mattress holds its shape and does not sink. The quilted contour feel of the pillowtop adds comfort and helps me fall asleep quickly. Even after the mattress has recently been turned, it provides the same comfort to each of us.

I used to be a mover while sleeping, but with the Fonda I am more comfortable staying in one position. When I do move around, the movement does not have my husband involuntarily moving with me. The mattress is quiet when moving about and does not squeak like our old mattress.

Even when I only get 6 hours sleep, I wake up more rested than 10 hours on our old mattress. Also, I wake with no pain in my legs, back, or shoulders, which was a problem with our previous mattress.

Not So Fond of Sleep:

Make:

I enjoy the pillowtop, but there is just something about being able to flip a mattress.

After making our bed with our light cotton comforter, the shape of the quilted contour of the pillowtop is obvious to the viewer.

The pillowtop is slippery and our mattress pad loves to jump up at night. Our sheets also come up and off the mattress at night. We have standard size full-sized sheets. With a 17 inch posturpedic pillowtop deep pocket sheets are recommended. My aunt, who has the same mattress and uses the deep pocket sheets, swears by them. The problem, a set of deep pocket sheets costs about $40, also I really like our standard sized sheets as they belonged to my grandmother.

Comfort:

No complaints.

Fonda Recommendation:

The Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress actually seems to get more comfortable the longer we have it; even if it was just turned 180 degrees. My husband and I have less trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep and less body pain since we found the Fonda. Deep pocket sheets can get expensive, but we have found at least one set of them are worth it. With regular sheets, we had to get up during the night and pull each side down.

Overall, I recommend the Sealy Posturpedic Fonda Ultra Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress. It is comfortable and inexpensive compared to other mattresses of its kind. Our sleep has not been the same since we got it; and that’s a good thing. Now if it could just get my husband to stop snoring…
