I have had back pain for many years following surgery and recently it has gotten so bad that I cannot sleep longer than about 4 or 5 hours before the pain is so bad I just have to get up. I hurt all night long and the pain goes up my entire back and hurts for hours each morning after I get up. I started to read reviews on the ajustable air beds and the memory foam beds. After reading many stories of unhappy users of the air beds, I decided on getting a memory foam bed. After reading tons of reviews on all sorts of memory foam mattresses. I settled on buying the Sleep Innovations Novaform mattress from Costco and also purchased at the same time the Sleep Innovations Novaform mattress topper. I decided to use them together due to my large frame and heavy weight. I did not want the main mattress to lose any ability to spring back over time and decided that the memory form topper would add to the total thickness of the memory foam which would be better for a very large person. Also the topper could be replaced very easy if needed even though it has a 10 year warranty. The Novaform 12 inch mattress has 3 inches of #4 density memory foam bonded on top of a main base of 9 inches of base foam. The Novaform topper has another 2 1/2 inches of #4 memory foam. This gives me a total of 5 1/2 inches of memory foam for my heavy weight. The topper comes with its own zippered cover which has 1 1/2 inches of plush padding and shows how the topper can be used on either side to have the plush padding above the memory foam or reverse the topper to sleep directly on the memory foam. The topper cover is designed to pull down and cover the edges on the main mattress just like any normal mattress cover which is nice to help keep it in place. I decided to try the topper with the plush padding facing up.

The packaging was great in that the king size mattress comes in a box with a set of wheels on it, and fits in just about any vehicle. The topper comes in another box and can be carried. I got both home and used on my old box springs which seemed very hard and stable which is important. I set up the bed within minutes and watched it grow in thickness over the next 6 hours before I slept on the bed. I know the instructions say the bed can take from 24 to 72 hours to grow to full size, but mine seemed very full after even 3 to 4 hours. I paid $659 for the 12 inch king and $161 for the topper. This is about $890 for a bed that should be equal or better than any memory bed available.

My first night on the new bed was the most wonderful experience. I woke up several times during the night and thought, wow I am pain free for the first time in years. I could actually feel the memory foam filling in the spaces under my body and giving support all over. When I would turn over in the night, it would only take a few seconds to again feel the memory foam filling the spaces under by body and giving what feels like a kind of lifting support all over. Many reviews stated that the #4 density foam was better than the #5 in order to give better support and fill in the spaces faster. All I know is that I am pain free and had the most wonderful night I can ever remember. I will check back later and update this review for any additional info.

Update: I have now slept on this bed for 5 nights, and have been pain free all week. I am in complete awe how this bed has changed my life and how I am now sleeping thru the night. I will post other updates later on.

Update 6 weeks later:

I have been pain free now for 6 weeks on this bed. I have slept in 2 hotels since during this time and was in pain both times, with the last time very severe back pain. The topper mattress combo I have seems perfect for my large heavy body and I am glad I bought both at the same time. There has been no compression of the memory foam topper or mattress during this time. I have now bought the exact same setup for my 83 year old mother who lives in another state. I ordered her set at the Costco web site and had it shipped. She is saying this is the most wonderful sleep setup she had ever seen in her 83 years! She is facing hip replacement surgery and has been in much pain while in bed. She has been largely pain free for several weeks now, but knows she still needs the new hip. My adult son has a sleep by number bed for 2 years and loves it. The other day he laid on my bed and said he could feel the memory foam filling in all around the small of his back and said he has not felt this with his bed. I will follow up again several months from now.

Update after 4 months

Not much has changed and I am still very pain free and happy with my Novaform setup. I have rotated the topper several times to keep the wear even, not that I have noticed any difference in the topper. My 83 year old mother continues to say how her bed and topper are the most comfortable bed she has ever slept on and comments often how wonderful this makes her feel. She had hip replacement surgery 3 weeks ago and is on the mend. She told me how she thinks the Novaform mattress and topper have made her feel as comfortable as possible during her healing.
