Stearns & Foster Blackwell Firm Mattress Luxury starts here. An outstanding bedding value with long-lasting firm comfort. ReviewsA lot of money for horrible service ...
I had this bed delivered on April 29th. So I have had it in use for about a month.
Prior to this, I was using a generic brand mattress with a wooden foundation. After 5 years in use that one had crapped out on me, so it was time for something new.
I checked out the Simmons, Sealy and Stearns & Foster. I stayed away from King Koil, since I’ve read that they’re a franchise and you may have problems with the warranty if you need to send the mattress back.
The Sealy beds were cheaper, but also more cheaply made, providing less support and you could feel the motion more.
The Simmons seemed pretty nice, their pillowtops were comfortable, and their price was reasonable. But, I couldn’t find one without the pillowtop (read further below for why I’d avoid the pillowtop models)
So, I settled on the entry level Stearns & Foster. Since I’m a stomach sleeper (from years of bad mattresses) I really need something firm.
Since I have only had this a month, I cannot say what the future will bring. I just read the review before mine on this, and I hope I will not encounter a similar situation.
Stearns & Foster is a good brand from what I’ve read and seen, but they were bought out by Sealy. While Sealy is one of the “top” mattress providers, their track record and quality isn’t so great.
What is really nice is that Stearns & Foster doesn’t play the name game that other manufacturers do. If you go to look at a Sealy Posturpedic Cushion Plush in one store, it may be named Extra Plush at another store, so you can’t really compare it (or get the 110% price guarantee that the stores offer you, if you find the “same” mattress somewhere else for less)
While most of the mattresses I checked out had a 14.5 wire guage rating, this mattress has a 12.75 wire guage. This means the wire is thicker and more durable, thus likely to last longer and provide better support.
This mattress is quite FIRM, so I recommend that you drop 20 bucks to get one of those egg crate style add-ons to give you a little bit of plushness. The reason you want to stay away from the “pillow top” models is because the pillow top is sewn onto the mattress, and it can get worn down and lumpy long before the coils give in. And then you’re stuck with it.
With the egg crate thingie you can pickup at a local wal mart, you only spend 20 bucks and if it goes bad you can remove it and replace it.
I noticed a huge difference with this bed compared with my previous one. It’s like I’m sleeping at a hotel, where I don’t feel my girlfriend tossing and turning on her side of the bed. I’ve gotten much better sleep since I’ve had this bed, and I hope it will last me 8-12 years.
The mattress is not required to be flipped, but it does include a rotation guide, although it doesn’t specify the frequency with which you should rotate.
On the side of the mattress you’ll find handles, for easy flipping. And there are also some gold air vents which look really cool, although your sheets of course will hide them.
I plan to flip it after 3 months, and then probably once every month or two. I’ll update this review accordingly, as things progress.
UPDATE ON MAY 21, 2003
I forgot to mention that I’m using the low-profile steel foundation with this bed. There is also a regular sized foundation offered, but since I’m only 5′1″ in height, it makes sense to go with the lower bed. There was no price difference between selecting one or the other foundation types.
UPDATE ON JUNE 20, 2003
So far so good, no problems with sagging or creaking. I plan to flip the bed in another month or so and I’ll keep this review updated.
UPDATE JULY 7, 2003
The mattress has been flipped per the manufacturers documentation. Still providing great support. I will provide updates periodically (every few months) to let you know how the mattress continues to feel.
UPDATE AUGUST 17, 2003
Still getting a great nights sleep on this puppy!
UPDATE NOVEMBER 22, 2003
Well, it’s been a few months, and…………it’s still great to sleep on! No creaking, little to no motion felt from your partner moving around on the other side, etc.
