Don’t get hustled! SAM Mattress
After years of service it was time to replace my mattress. As many of you know shopping for a mattress is not a pleasant experience. Many of the tactics used by these mattress chains are designed to misguide the consumer. For example, a Serta pillow top in one store will have a different name in another and may even be a different color. The best way to compare from store to store is to learn the coil count and firmness level of the bed.
Months later I found the Comfort Direct website while researching adjustable(Craftmatic type) beds. I called the 800 number listed on the site. The salesperson was actually the owner of the company, Kevin. Immediately Kevin began to push the SAM (Self-Adjusting Mattress). He told me that every hospital in the country where patients must stay in bed for long periods of time use the SAM mattress. He said the reason they use the SAM is because of the patented air valves. It wasn’t until much later I learned this was all BS.
I ordered the SAM and it was delivered in about 2 weeks. The advertised functions of the bed seemed very appealing and with a 100% money back guarantee it seemed I had nothing to lose. Oh how wrong I was!
After all the sunshine Kevin blew I was expecting a state of the art mattress. But when I unpacked and assembled the bed I was extremely disappointed. First of all the directions were the most poorly written instructions I have ever read. The materials seemed cheap and flimsy for the money. When the bed was finally constructed I tried it out. At first the bed seemed firm but then I slowly felt myself sinking into it. It seemed as if the whole self-adjusting was working.
When I woke up the following morning I felt like I just went 12 rounds with Mohammed Ali. My entire body was sore and stiff. I had tossed and turned all night. I know that it usually takes some getting used to but I have slept in hotels all over the world even third world countries and have never experienced such an unpleasant night of sleep.
The bed comes with a firmness control located on the side of the bed. Thinking this would fix the problem I tried different settings over the next few nights. This just made the problem worse.
Soon after I called Kevin at Comfort Direct. He told me I just had to get used to it. About a month later I was so sleep deprived I was falling asleep behind the wheel on my way to and from work. I decided to return the bed for a refund. Kevin was not accomodating. First he tried to get me to exchange the bed for a different model. To do so I would have to pay to ship the bed back to him and if I didn’t like the new bed I’d have to pay to have that one shipped back as well. I just wanted my money back. Kevin then became very nasty and told me that there would be a restocking fee applied to my return. At this point I decided to donate the bed to charity.
PS.
Don’t be fooled by the positive Epinion reviews on this mattress. Many have been written by Comfort Direct cronies. Check out the Comfort Direct website and you’ll find the same people writing testimonials for the company. After some investigation I discovered Comfort Direct offers kickbacks to healthcare professionals for recommending and endorsing the SAM mattress. There are opinions are totally biased. Don’t put anything passed Kevin Dyevich or Comfort Direct.
