My husband and I purchased the Englander natures finest latex mattress four years ago. We wanted a mattress that would last us for many years, and since I have problems with back pain we decided to get a higher-end model. We really liked the feel of the Englander in the store, and we were told by the salesman that it would last for up to 30 years. So, we made what was for us a very big investment and bought the Englander. What a huge mistake!
For the first six months or so, it was really comfortable. Eventually my back started to hurt at night and we began to feel like the bed was no longer flat. We flipped the mattress every few months as recommended. When we flipped it, it felt better for awhile, but inevitably the peaks and valleys came back. Finally, I could no longer stand it and I contacted the store. This is a great mom-and-pop business, and they were responsive to my concerns. However, they explained that the warranty on the mattress was void since I had spilled coffee on the mattress, and even if it were not the impressions were not deep enough for Englander to do anything. The store owner offered to sell me another mattress at half-price, but asked me to try sleeping on our mattress sideways for a few weeks. This seemed pretty ridiculous to me, but we agreed to give it a shot, and it did indeed help a bit, but before long the body impressions were back. I felt bad about taking the store owner up on his offer to sell me a half-priced mattress since we had had the Englander for several years. Plus, we had invested so much in the Englander that we really didnt want to spend more on another mattress, even at a discount.
Since the body impressions develop because we did not sleep evenly on all parts of the mattress, I decided to try to remedy the situation by placing weight on the parts of the mattress that felt higher, like the very edge of the mattress. I did this by cutting a 1×4 foot sheet of 5/8 thick plywood, placing it on the mattress every morning on these places that felt too high, and putting a heavy weight on it (I used a filled five-gallon water jug). Again, it helped a bit, but the effect was not permanent and it got really tiresome to keep this weight by my bed and place it every morning. Over time, the mattress got much worse, despite all our efforts. We felt like we were lying on the slanted edges of a canyon in the middle of our bed. Finally, after a particularly bad night in which my husband and I both woke up with backaches, we decided to take a pretty drastic step. The store owner had explained to me that the body impressions are only in the pillowtop material, not the latex core. So, we took a hobby knife and cut the pillowtop foam and all of the outer lining of the mattress away, until all that was left was the piece of latex. This may sound crazy, but it was a big improvement! We slept just on the latex core for awhile, but it was a bit firmer than I like so we bought a 2.5-inch memory foam mattress topper from Costco. Its perfect! Really comfortable and perfectly flat. Finally, we got this bed just the way we want it.
So, if you are considering buying this mattress, please dont. It is very comfortable at first, but it wont stay that way. However, if you are like me and already blew your money on this thing, have a sore back, and are now reading e-pinions to see if other people also had your experience (misery loves company, right?), you might consider the solution I tried. It is not hard to get the latex core out of the lining, and for $150 (the cost of the mattress topper) we feel like we have a brand new mattress. I thoroughly regret buying Englander, since I endured 4 years of back pain and all that is now left is a slab of latex, and Im sure I could have bought that for a lot less than $1700. However, its a comfy slab of latex, so I guess alls well that ends well.
