When it was finally time to retire our trusty old mattress, we opted for the pricey yet popular Sleep Number 5000. It was delivered to our door and we set it up that night. I was pretty surprised to discover that it’s JUST AN AIRMATTRESS! Sure, I knew that air was used in the “dual chambers” to adjust the firmness of the bed, but your money would be better spent going to Wal-Mart, purchasing two inflatable air mattresses, throwing them on a set of box springs, slapping on some padding and calling it a dual-air chamber bed.
Furthermore, the air chambers don’t even run the entire width of the bed. The company provides thick foam padding (about 4-6″, I’d estimate), to line the outside edges of the bed. This means that if you have a softer sleep number (like I do), you won’t be able to roll too far to the edge of the bed, as the “firmness” will change once you hit the foam padding. These same pads make it difficult for me to get OUT of bed, as the air chamber I sleep on sits below the level of the pads.
My husband also complains as his sleep number is firmer - and when he rolls over near the middle of the bed, he starts “falling” down to my softer side.
Folks, save your money and invest in something different. The Sleep Number beds are WAY too pricey for what they really are - an air mattress with foam padding.
