REVISED! (FULL STORY) Please take the time to read this, as you’re making a big investment in something you’ll be spending a lot of time & money on.

So we go to check out various mattresses, and we come upon the Select Comfort store. Having seen the commercials, and having been refered by a person I work with, my fiance and I decided to try them out. So we tried the bed, and it was pretty comfortable (then again, most beds feel that way when you’re not able to truly lie on them for a longer period). So we were sold on the fact that I could make it as firm or as soft as needed. From there, we were told we’d be contacted within a few days to schedule a delivery date, and we’d have the bed within two weeks.

Three days go by, and I get a call from Select Comfort. The person on the phone tells me they’ll be delivering it on a Friday. I let him know that my fiance and I both work (and the jobs we have don’t allow taking time off to wait for a mattress), and politely asked if we could have a Saturday delivery instead. He stated “this is the only day we have open, so we’ll call you a few days before that Friday to confirm. At that time you can switch to a different day”. I found it quite odd that the delivery was all about them, and not about the customer’s schedule. I was optimistic however, and waited for the call.

The call that NEVER came. Tuesday… Wednesday… Thursday. I call their customer service on Thursday asking why I hadn’t received a call. They claim they called, yet nothing shows on either my cell or home caller ID (Fiance confirmed she never saw their # either - and no message on our voicemail). Select Comfort then goes on to tell me it’ll be delivered within a FOUR HOUR PERIOD on Friday. I ask if they can narrow that down to about an hour (or make me their first delivery), so that I could possibly just run an hour late to work. No go. I then ask to speak to a manager, and they tell me that there’s no manager in - that the manager will call me first thing in the morning. So I told them to cancel the Friday delivery for now, and I’d wait for the managers call back.

Well, it was now noon on Friday with no call back. I called in, and to my luck, got ahold of the manager on the first ring in. Explained my situation to her, and she was very happy to assist. We got off the phone and she contacted the delivery guys, and called back to confirm it’d be delivered between 8am-12pm on Saturday. She also said they’d call a half-hour before delivery. I thanked her 100 times over, and was completely satisfied. If I only knew what was to come.

So Saturday I had a TON of things to get done, but patiently waited for the installation/delivery guys. 8am.. 9am… 10am… 11am.. 11:30am rolls around, and I’m a little concerned at this point (having not received the half-hour before call). I call in to their customer service, they call the delivery guys.. and GUESS WHAT. They NEVER GOT THE DELIVERY ORDER. To top it off, my bed was now sitting in a locked dock 20 minutes from where I live, that’s not open on Saturday’s. I had now wasted an entire half of my Saturday (which trust me, in my profession, is most valued when you have no time during the week). I was furious, to say the least.

I called in and spoke to another manager, and politely ripped him a new one. I explained that I know it’s not his fault, but that the previous manager and delivery guys had screwed up BIG time. He offered to comp the delivery, and said “only if you can get this bed to me by Monday”. Of course, he couldn’t guarantee anything. At this point, I was simply ready to cancel. Between the non-flexible delivery schedule, being lied to about the Saturday delivery, and then wasting a good portion of my Saturday, I had HAD enough.

I called the local store that I’d gone through to purchase the bed, and spoke to their manager. I explained what had happened, and let him know I’d be returning the bed. This was mainly to notify the salesrep we’d worked with, because I know it wasn’t his fault (he just happens to work for an organization that cares nothing for customer service).

THIS manager, however, wasn’t going to sit back and let this happen. He called their local regional manager, who then proceeded to call someone high up at Select Comfort. Next thing I know, the bed was delivered on Monday.

——————–BED REVIEW TIME—————–

This part I’ll keep pretty simple. The bed turned out to be the most uncomfortable thing I’d ever slept on. Here are the main reasons why NOT to purchase (besides their crappy service):

> The grand “Select Number” that you choose, can change throughout the night based on a number of factors, including body heat, blankets, body position, and whether the person sleeping next to you might have rolled a bit on your side.

> If you switch positions during the middle of the night, be prepared to change your number. Yes, there’s nothing like waking up (and waking up your partner) and having to adjust the # on your side to feel comfortable. ARGH!

> They say to get your number accurate, you should first fill up the bed to max, then lie in bed for 15 minutes in your “sleep position”, and THEN adjust the setting. Umm.. who has 15 minutes every night to wait until they can adjust it. Just so you know, the number was NEVER the same at any time.. it ALWAYS adjusted on you.

OVERALL –> I’ve since returned the bed (and the only day they could pick it up was on a Friday, four hour window, of course), and purchased a Sealy bed for over $1,000 less. The comfort level is incredible on the Sealy - trust me, and try them out (the non-foam version that is). I’ve never slept better, and have a hard time getting out of bed because they’re so comfortable.

Don’t be fooled.. when I took this bed apart to get it returned, I found that it was just two cheap air mattresses, a think piece of foam surrounding them, and a thin thin thin layer of foam on top. Surround these by the standard cover, and you’d think it was actually a bed. What you’re really paying for, is the fact that you just got duped into paying thousands for an air mattress. By the way, Coleman Mattresses go for $15-$30, and are more comfortable.
