Ten years ago, I slept on Swedish Foam Mattress while at a bed and breakfast in Denmark. I had been having back troubles at the time, and feared they would be worsened by the rigors of traveling, lugging suitcases, and sleeping in different beds. The mattress in the room at my B&B was only about 5 inches thick and laid on a solid wood slab-type frame. I immediately thought I was in trouble. I was doubly delighted when I slept like a baby that night.
A couple of years later, I was having back problems again, and allergy problems, and decided to upgrade my mattress in hopes that it would help. Naturally, I recalled my good experience with Swedish foam and went shopping with that in mind. I came home with an innerspring mattress with a thick layer of Swedish memory foam on top. I think, at the time, I was a little apprehensive about going all-foam, so the hybrid concept was appealing. The all-foam mattress was also a little out of my price range. I slept happily on that mattress for 3 years.
In the meantime, my parents, who are both large people with bad backs, bought the all-foam mattress. They loved it, and I was very impressed after taking a few naps on their bed when reading stories to my nieces.
Then, I remarried. As we were in our forties and on our second marriages, we both had our own beds. I loved mine. His was rock hard, and while he didn’t mind it, he was open to trying something different. (He has rheumatoid arthritis, so stiffness and pain are a constant problem.) Because of my bad back, and because I’d gotten spoiled by my wonderful, foam-topped mattress, I was not willing to sleep on a hard mattress.
So… not only did we have the typical challenges of combining two established households into one, but I own a business that requires me to be on site much of the time, in one town, and he had a nice parsonage and needed to be in the town where his church is many nights. We needed to compromise. I was willing to spend half our our nights here and half there (the town are 45 miles or one hour apart) on one condition — that we had the same mattress at both houses so I would always feel like I was sleeping in my own bed.
When we went to buy another mattress just like mine, we found that the model I had had been discontinued. To make a long story short, we bought two queen-sized, solid foam mattresses four years ago.
I will not claim the mattresses are perfect, nor, that they have cured all of my back problems, but we do love sleeping on our Swedish foam mattress, and every time we travel, we are reminded very quickly why we love them.
I truly feel like I am sleeping on a cloud when I’m in bed. The mattress supports me by conforming to my shape. According to my doctor, I’m supposed to be sleeping on my back. Whereas before, I would get very sore and have to keep changing positions, I can now stay on my back comfortably all night. When I do switch temporarily to my side, I am also comfortable. Rolling over is not a problem, and the bed is firm and comfortable right to the edge of the mattress.
The temperature does conform to your body, and as my husband is a hot body person, he uses fairly few covers, even in the winter. I love the cozy feeling. In the summer, we sleep just fine under a ceiling fan. When one of us rolls over, the other does not feel it — a wonderful thing when you are have been used to sleeping alone for over a decade.
I do feel the foam mattress has helped both my bad back, and now fibromyalgia, and my husband’s arthritic joints. I am in extreme pain after a couple of hours in a regular bed, even those with supposed pillow tops. Thank goodness for our Swedish memory foam mattress or I would be in constant agony!
