We have tried many mattresses over the years but ultimately I have had problems with them all due to a bad back and hip. We tested out the Tempur-Pedic at a local furniture store and fell in love with it immediately. We purchased the 10″ king with box springs since we didn’t have any on our previous bed.
We have had the mattress 10 months with no physical problems with it thus far with the mattress, time will tell if the claims of lasting only 3 years will hold true. We purchased it at a local furniture store and did buy the box springs since our previous bed did not have them.
I find I am able to sleep more sound and not feel my husband tossing or turning in bed which usually wakens me at night. It has helped ease up some of the morning pain I had been experiencing from laying on a hard mattress that caused my spine to misalign.
Getting out of bed in the morning isn’t too terribly difficult, however, if someone were disabled or with severe back problems it might be a bit difficult for them to get out of the bed. Definately test the bed by getting in and of the bed before several times before you purchase it if you purchase it from a furniture store. I also recommend you go with a low profile box spring and bed frame, a high profile may make it difficult for some to get in and out of the bed itself.
When they delivered our bed it was in during the winter time, two men carried it in folded in half just after they set up the bed itself (we purchased a new bed too). At the time being the mattress was cold or frozen if you will, it was very light and easy to move around and adjust. The mattress unfolded itself onto the boxspring over a period of about 8 hours. It did have an odor to it that seemed to cling around a few days, I am told this is normal. If you have problems with migraines caused by various odors or are just sensitive to them in general, then you might not want to sleep on this bed the first few nights. I ended up with a migraine the first night.
We soon discovered that after the bed warmed up and flattened itself on the box springs it was very heavy and difficult to move around on the box springs to make sure it sat on them properly. If your mattress is already warmed prior to placing on the bed be sure you have it where you plan to keep it for a long while because it is not the easiest thing to move around. I can’t even imagine it taking less than 3 people to carry and move the mattress that has sat in warm conditions for a while!
The actual temperature of the room affects the firmness or softness of the bed as well as your sheets. If it is cool the bed will be firmer, if the room is warm or hot it will be soft.
We found that during winter months (we live in a seasonal climate) that the bed did feel much firmer however, after laying in the bed about an hour or so it did warm up quite well and made for an extra comfy nights sleep.
During the summer months or when the bedroom stays at a constant 70 or higher, the bed is always soft the minute you jump in and it will heat up over time from your body heat and retain a level of heat. If you are running air conditioning or central air in your bedroom and it is set to about 68 degrees the bed will also feel very firm. I wouldn’t suggest you place it right on top or very close to a vent that supplies your heat and air conditioning as this will affect the bed.
Sheets do make all the difference in terms of comfort and the feel of the bed of the bed when laying in it regardless of bed or room temperature.
A tight fitting sheet will not allow the bed to conform properly to your body, a looser fitted sheet such as a T-shirt style will greatly improve comfort and cradle you better. I do suggest you purchase deep pocket sheets if you go with the 10″ bed, you are going to need it. If you are unable to find a stretchy fitted sheet or dislike them I suggest you use a flat sheet instead as your primary sheet tuck it and fold it on the bed with “hospital corners” but be sure it is not tight on the bed. If you are bouncing quarters off of the bed it is too tight! Try loosening up the sheets just a bit. Because the bed does retain heat I wouldn’t put flannel sheets on it. We tried that once in the middle of winter and woke up feeling as though we slept in a sauna.
Putting your bottom sheet on the bed can be difficult task if you have the bed pushed up against a wall or tight against your head and foot board or have no room to move around. Add to the fact that the mattress is so very heavy it can be difficult to even tuck in corners or pull a corner up to place inside a fitted sheet. I have a very difficult time making the bed due to back problems and therefor my spouse must help me do it or he handles it himself.
I would further recommend you do not tuck in your blankets because it might make it nearly impossible to move around the bed if you have them drawn tight on you. If you are like me and like to sleep with one foot on top the covers and the blanket and top sheet is tucked in, good luck in trying to pull them out from under the bed when actually laying in the bed.
Overall it is a great mattress despite some of the cons that come with it. It is quite expensive but you can’t put a price on a good nights sleep.
