I have always loved Platform beds for their simple elegance and lack of foundation. At the same time, I hate traditional spring mattresses that you have to flip frequently and STILL gets uneven after just a couple of years…even the expensive ones! Air mattresses seemed perfect for me! When researching air beds, Select Comfort and Comfortaire appear to be the leaders. Then there are no names which appear to be Far East copies, although the leaders often market their mattresses under private labels.
Comfortaire appears equivalent to Select Comfort. I found the lower price appealing and also the lack of a foam strip dividing the two halves of the queen (like the SC models). The warrantee is NOT all that. Apparently it is prorated and becomes quite limited after 5 years. However, traditional spring matresses offer deceiving 20 year warrantees–they often get lumpy after 2-3 year yet what’s covered is catastrophic defects like a spring poking out (not likely). In any case, at worse with the air mattresses, the air chambers may develop a leak or you may experience a pump failure. Otherwise, the other components should last as long as any traditional mattress. The air chambers are rubber with overlaid cotton to prevent ballooning over time. All components appear to be decent quality but certainly not what you would expect out of an $$$$ mattress. To some extent, you are paying for the design and warrantee. (BTW, ebay has refurb, “new” and used air mattresses if you don’t care about warrantees)
The bed is easy to set up without any assistance. I opted for the memory foam (viscoelastic) topper which takes a few hours to expand to full size once unwrapped–wait until it does to assemble the mattress. My preference is for slightly firm so with the chambers pumped full, it is exactly that. The pillowtop softens the mattress to just how I like it (memory foam may also have a part). Traditional non-pillowtops can be had if you really like moderate firmness.
My recommendations:
Shipping is not cheap so the trial period is not exactly free–go to a select comfort dealer and try out their beds. Comfortaire will be about the same but cheaper! Ask select comfort why their beds cost $200-400 more than a comparable Comfortaire!
Pumps. Don’t go for fancy pumps. Not many people adjust their mattress firmness frequently at all. In fact, I disconnect the pump totally and use the included stoppers to plug the air tubing to the pumps. My pump does not even have a number scale… you adjust it by pumping it full, then counting the seconds you wait while letting air out to set it softer–kind of ghetto but fairly reproducible.
Uniformity. If you can tell you are sleeping on a pea, you may want to opt for the single air chamber. With the dual air chamber, you can feel the slight unevenness in the middle where the air chambers meet–not a problem if you never sleep in the middle. I can only imagine select comfort being worse with their foam median.
Hype. Don’t believe it. No studies have shown air mattresses are better for your back than traditional spring beds. Still, good traditional beds are not cheap either and the pluses of air mattresses are definitely desireable. Also, be wary of stores that claim high epinions accolades. MANY reviews on epinions are doctored. That also probably includes a few comfortaire reviews. Be wary of people who review just a single product/vendor in the last 3 years…especially those that read like a company brochure. Check it out and you’ll see what I mean.
Update: All is still well with the mattress. I just wanted to emphasize the difference of the center foam that Select Comfort uses in between the air chambers of their king and queen mattresses. I have had a coworker tell me the foam center can definitely be felt lying anywhere near the center of the bed and without a doubt bothersome. In fact she returned the bed during the trial period and I was shocked when she told me her mattress even cost $600 more than mine! I don’t think you can beat Comfortaire for value!
BTW, I called comfortaire and asked about the single air chamber for the queen. They told me that it would cost $150 which I thought was quite reasonable, given the retail cost of the bed. Guess that is always an option if the center divide bothers you.
12/03: Well, given that I’m a single guy and have no need for the dual adjustment, I went ahead and got the single air chamber for $150. I figure if I ever get hitched, the dual chambers can go right back in. Man, I gotta say, this is the most comfortable bed ever!!! Every night when it is time to sleep, I marvel at how comfy the bed is. Now if I can just find that perfect pillow!
