About 2 years ago I purchased a tempurpedic mattress from Brookstone. I had been thinking about this for quite a while, but after my wife consistently had back pains after waking up we decided we needed to try something different than a regular mattress.
The top contenders were the tempurpedic and Select Comfort - both were “different” from the traditional type of mattresses. I was talking to my manager and he said he recently bought a Select Comfort and really liked it, but had some problems with the pump. As we were talking, somebody else heard us and stopped in to talk about his tempurpedic.
My wife and I tried each of the types in our local mall. The tempurpedic definitely felt different, and the Select Comfort looked and felt more like a traditional bed. They offered a topper of the same type of material TempurPedic had, but I had to ask why bother with that then?
After much debate, we bought the tempurpedic from Brookstone when we had a good deal.
The first night on the mattress definitely felt “odd”. I remember feeling like it was difficult to move around because of the way the bed cradled you. Moving and changing positions took effort which I wasn’t used to. But by the third night, I really didn’t notice it anymore.
The mattress definitely makes you toss & turn less than on a conventional mattress. My wife claims she wakes up in exactly the same position she fell asleep in, and doesn’t believe she moves at all during the night.
My wife’s back pains have definitely lessened (but are not completely gone). I never thought I had any types of aches or pains from sleeping, but after sleeping in other beds during vacation, I notice a huge difference in how I feel when I wake up.
As my title says, one of the things we miss most when going on vacation is the bed, and it’s one of the things we look forward to when returning from vacation.
The bed just feels so right now, I can’t imagine going back to anything else. The support is pretty much perfect, and I haven’t had any of the sweating type problems I’ve heard others complain about - and that’s saying a lot, since my wife is always hot, even in the winter.
The only negative is that the bed tends to get hard if the room temperature is cold. We keep our house cool in the winter (58 degrees at night time), and the bed is a bit on the hard side when we first get it in. But it only takes a few minutes for our own body heat to soften it up. But it’s really not a problem unless we return from vacation after keeping the heat at 55 for a week, in which case the bed really is hard!
I’m not usually one to write to a company to say how great their product is (I will complain though!), but I did write to tempurpedic. Below is my testimonial:
I used to be happy with my old traditional bed. I always thought I got a good night sleep, and although I got minor aches in the morning, it really never bothered me - I was used to it. My wife had problems with her back, and usually woke up with bigger aches than I did - she was used to it as well. After all, after laying on your side or back all night, who wouldn’t expect a few pains?
Just over a year ago we bought a tempurpedic. When we first got it we weren’t sure what to think. It definitely felt different than any other bed I slept on before. Because I never was bothered too much by my old bed, I didn’t notice a difference, at least not right away (my wife did.)
Since then, any time we travel and sleep in a hotel, we both notice a huge difference in the morning. I wake up with kinks in my neck, sore shoulders, and a general unrested feel. My wife gets those lower back aches that she doesn’t get at home.
My complaint is that your bed has pampered us to the point we feel like we’re living the children’s story “The Princess and the Pea”. The aches and pains we had gotten accustomed to and ignored, we can no longer ignore. While I didn’t notice a big difference when we got the tempurpedic bed, I do notice a big difference when we’re not sleeping on
it!
One of the things we look forward to most when returning home from vacation is sleeping in our own bed!
