After trying out what seemed to be every bed in every store in my area, I found the Simmons Backcare to be the most comfortable for my hip and shoulder problems. But then I read the reviews posted here and worried that this expensive ($1,400) bed might not stand the test of time. So I did some research and learned that the Backcare line has been totally revamped for 2005.

The Simmons site isn’t very specific about what is new, but according to a couple of salesmen (get that grain of salt ready):

- Backcare now has pocketed coils like the Beautyrest line, so motion transfer is less

- The coils are heavier

- There is better edge support (coil or form depending on model)

- The new model is a no-flip, no-rotate mattress (THIS seems too good to be true, so I’m going to confirm with Simmons)

Revamping the Backcare line confirms that there were problems with the old design, since my research (beyond the salesmen) indicated this was more than just a standard yearly model change. But to me it also means there’s a good chance they tried really hard to make sure this new version fixes recurring problems. So once I answer the flip/rotate question, I may well take the plunge.

So if the Backcare seems like it might be the right mattress for you, don’t base your decision solely on reviews of two and three year-old models. And word to the wise. Beware of closeouts and too-good-to-be-true prices. You may be buying the last of the problem models.
