Our Select Comfort bed was fine for the first 3 years. We purchased the mattress and the foundation (i.e., box spring). The air pump motor went out and was replaced. Then the remote went out and was replaced. We had to replace the foam spacer “rails” at our expense because the foam breaks down after a while. The worst is the mildew that develops on top of the air bladders. Select Comfort says that this is “normal” and happens to all beds. The solution they offered was to unzip the pillow top each week and wipe the air bladders down with a bleach solution to kill any “normal” mildew. So, if it’s not the rubber smell, it’s a bleach smell. Sure is a lot of maintenance for a bed, especially one that costs this much. You can buy a lot of standard mattresses for the cost of one of Select Comfort’s beds. As for the foundation (box spring), don’t waste your money. They squeak and creak after a while and there is no way to remedy this. Select Comfort told us that this was “normal,” too. Bottom line, think again before buying one of these and don’t get caught up with the “sleep number” gimmick. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t. We’re still battling Select Comfort to get them to correct the problems with our bed going on 8 years now.

I took the advise of another Epinions member and tried Select Comfort’s customer service department again. They have definitely changed the way they do business. Rather than recommend a bleach wash, they replaced the air chambers and mattress cover. They also shipped a kit free of charge to make the foundation quieter against squeaks. Bravo for Select Comfort! The new air chambers are said to have been treated against mold and mildew. Select Comfort even paid for the return shipping of the old air chambers and mattress.
