Before purchasing Sleep Number 5000, my wife and I slept on a mattress and box spring set that was probably 30 years old (at the very least). The box set was so old that you could see the wood slats, springs and ticking if you turned one of the boxes over.
I have chronic lower back pain associated with disc problems. With our old bed, it usually took me at least 30 minutes of moving around in the morning to loosen up the stiffness. Never mind the fact that back pain sometimes woke me up during the night. It was without a doubt the most uncomfortable bed we ever slept in.
We looked at the TempurPedic system, but the mattress seemed to get hot after only a short time. My wife hated that feature. We looked at the Sleep Number system several times but “were just looking.”
We finally took the plunge and replaced the old mattress with a Sleep Number 5000. We opted for home delivery, and the bed showed up exactly when the company said it would — no surprises at all. Pillows and some miscellaneous bedding arrived by UPS a day or two ahead of the bed. It took the company techs about an hour to assemble the bed; they did so very professionally and took time to answer questions my wife and I had.
After the techs left, we “dressed” our new bed and waited for bedtime to arrive. After crawling under the comforter, we set our respective sleep numbers; my wife’s was initially 45, and mine was 65. The next morning, my wife woke up with a terrible neck headache (she suffers from them chronically) that she attributed to her contour pillow being too tall and the her sleep number being too low. She exchanged her 6-inch contour pillow for a 4-inch and increased her sleep number to 70. NO MORE NECK HEADACHES! I too increased my sleep number to 70; 65 was just too soft.
The bottom line is that we have both found that 70 is our ideal number. I no longer wake up with back pain, and I sleep through the night pain-free, and my wife is getting a more rejuvenating night’s sleep (as am I).
I’ve read some reviews of the Sleep Number 4000 where people claim the system was the worst investment they ever made. Hard to see why. Pilot error? Unrealistic expectations? It’s hard to tell.
All I can say is that my wife and I both stood and watched the techs assemble our bed, and the materials looked to be of good (no, very good) quality. We like the pillow top’s detachable feature and the fact that if a system component wears out, it can be replaced without having to purchase an entirely new mattress. You can’t do that with a Simmons or Beauty Rest…
