I have been sleeping on a Deluxe 10 inch Tempurpedic queen size mattress for the past 3 months.
I have been curious about this mattress for a long time now. I finally decided to give it a try. I figured, if I hated it, I could return it under Tempurpedic’s trial offer.
I have read the reviews here for quite some time, and, I guess you could say it’s about half and half. So, of course, the negative reviews took precedence in my mind and influenced me more than the positive ones. I guess that is just human nature.
But, something just kept nagging at me to try it anyway. So, as I said, I’ve had it for three months now.
I hated it for 3 weeks. I was convinced I was going to give it back. But a friend of mine who has one kept insisting to wait for a least a month. He said he and his wife had about a 3 week adjustment period too, and now they would not sleep on anything else.
I particularly had trouble finding the right pillow, because the mattress is so radically different. And requires some real adjustments.
I begrudgingly waited just in case it would get better, but I was convinced I was going to send it back.
Then, all of a sudden, about 3 weeks into my trial, it changed.
I could not believe it. And still can’t believe it. Because I have never had a mattress that has come close to this mattress. I cannot rave about it enough.
I LOVE IT.
Here are some things to think about when deciding on this mattress.
1. It is RADICALLY different from any other mattress you have ever slept on. It redefines what “getting into bed” feels like. Psychologically you really have to be prepared to give up your old ideas of what “bed” is like. Most of us have grown up on boxsprings and innersprings. With a Tempurpedic those days are gone forever. And, for me, I almost had to go through a grieving period about that. I can only see that looking back on those first three weeks. But I really think that is why I hated it so much. And was so resistant to it. I felt robbed of that particular feeling. The good news, is I am HAPPY to say goodbye to that now. Keep reading to see why.
2. I used to have the worst insominia. I put off going to bed til 2 and 3 in the morning, because I could not bear lying there and not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning and wide awake. I swear that I fall asleep almost immediately with this mattress. I am talking within 5 minutes I am out like a light. This is nothing short of a miracle for me. I never even dreamed that any mattress would do this for me. I actually fall asleep like a normal sleeper now. It’s one of the greatest gifts of this mattress, for me. Something I never thought was possible for me. My chronic difficulty in falling asleep was a life long problem. How in the world is it possible that this mattress reversed this for me? I sure don’t know. But I am ecstatic about it.
3. I have a terrible back and neck. And, to be honest, for the first three weeks, my neck pains got worse. I needed to find a different pillow solution. Now, I have absolutely no back or neck pain when I wake up. None. I have never had this either on any innerspring. So this is a revelation to me.
4. I sleep through the night. I don’t wake up like I used to a toss and turn. Maybe once during the night. Or turn maybe once. So I am sleeping longer and deeper. 7, 8 hours. As compared to 4-6 hours. that is a huge difference. People are actually remarking on how good I look. I just know it’s the fact that I am well rested. Which was something I never was before.
5. All this talk about sleeping in wet mud and sinking into holes to turn. I don’t know what to say. I like the mud feeling. This bed absorbs energy. Like in the infomercials where they throw an egg at it and it doesn’t break. Well that “mud” feeling is fantastic to me. I call it a “zen” feeling. It calms me. I see it as a huge plus. It feels like it absorbs the tension out of me in some weird way. Again, it’s just so radically different, that if you resist it and don’t accept it, you’ll judge it as wet mud. I love that feeling. As far as turing, I got used to that in a week or two. It’s no big deal. I like to turn in this bed.
6. I believe this bed actually guides me to better posture. I noticed one day in the adjustment stage that I felt some pain in my hip. So I lay there thinking about where it was. And noticed that I had my legs bent, almost in a fetal position. I changed the position and straightened my legs and shifted my weight and the pain went away…and lo and behold I was in a healthier, more aligned position. So it trained me away from bad sleeping postures and habits.
7. Some people will hate this bed. It’s predicatable. Something this radically different will naturally produce some very negative AND very positive responses. But some of the reviews here astound me. They just don’t even begin to describe my experience of this mattress. So I am wondering if a lot of the reviews are referring to the original 8 inch Tempurpedic. The reviews that say it is too hard. Please make note that I am ONLY reviewing the Deluxe 10 inch Tempurpedic, which is NOT HARD. It’s nothing like the 8 inch. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that if you get a Tempurpedic, I think the most popular one now and the best one is the 10 inch one. I tried the 8 inch too, and I hated it.
8. The other thing that I love is that there is no more pressure point pain. It’s amazing to me how I can lay in bed now on my back or side and have absolutely no more pressure pain.
It’s been about 3 months now. I don’t have any heat problems at all. The 10 inch one has some air flow channnels that must really help. Because heat is not an issue at all. I do notice I need less blankets and stuff. But that’s nice actually.
I know this review is a rave. But I can’t help it. This mattress delivered way beyond my expectations. And I praise it every single day now.
I’ll update this from time to time as I sleep on it longer, in terms of how it holds up. But right now, I could not love it more.
