Beautyrest is nothing but a huge Dip! Simmons Beautyrest Adjustable Bed

Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Non-flip design. Open coil.
February 2008. Within 6 months there were 2 HUGE dips in the bed -besides me & my spouse. We contacted Beautyrest after the mattress distributor went out of business. Beautyrest sent a technician that was either very stupid, or was paid to act stupid. He told us that while he could see dips, it was our fault for not flipping the mattress that is unflippable. It has a long bar that holds the mattress in place when it raises, there is no real mattress on the other side. He told us to flip it anyway and sent a report to Beautyrest -who denied our claim- that he told us to flip the mattress.
Most of the edging has broken down after 2 years, and now the dips are deep enough that my dog can’t get out if he accidently falls in…
Shopping for an adjustable bed
My spouse and I hit every mattress and department store in the valley looking at the pros and cons of each kind of adjustable bed.
We knew that we didn’t want Twin sized adjustable because of the logistics of sleeping in separate beds with shared or separate sheets and shared blankets. Although this would stop the blanket stealing…
We’ve tried sleeping in Queen sized beds, and we would knee and kick each other all night.
Until I found the Simmons Beautyrest Adjustable in King size, I didnt even know that you could get a one-piece king size constructed top mattress for adjustable beds. Our search was over.
Wireless or not wireless?
One of the options available is to have wireless remotes to raise and lower your bed. The wireless feature was an extra $200 that we did not feel necessary to spend. A year later, and we still dont have any major problems with having a hard-wired hand control unit. There is the occasional handset falling off the headboard and we have to fish it back up from the floor, but its never been difficult. BUT, if you do purchase the wireless remote, you can get the massage unit too. We tried it out in the store, and the massage chairs at Sharper Image are much better, yet we havent bought one of those either! Its almost like putting a quarter in the bed at one of those cheap hotels along the highway.
King size Setup
The mattress store where we bought the bed included delivery and set up.
The bed comes with 2 twin base units, complete with lifting units, one king top mattress, a coupler for the 2 base unit cords, a mattress retainer bar to replace the 2 retainer bars that wouldve been used for twin size operation, and 2 hand control units, although in a King configuration, only 1 is used. We also got thrown in; a King size mattress pad and sheet holders for adjustable beds.
The installers quickly set up the 2 base units, removed the old retainers, placed the mattress on top of the bases and inserted the mattress retainer bar into the sleeve in the mattress. Unfortunately this means that the mattress is never to be flipped or rotated.
The 2 twin base hand units are coupled into one unit to operate both halves of the bed. The hand controller unit has a clip to attach to your bed so you dont lose the unit to under the bed too often.
King size Operation
As Homer Simpson said when he was waiting for his coronary bypass surgery: Bed goes up, bed goes down. Bed goes up, bed goes down
The hardwired handset is very basic, 2 buttons with 2 arrows on each button. ^ And v, Up or down. The left button controls the foot end of the bed; the right button controls the head end of the bed. If you buy the wireless controller, you get 17 buttons and a Time/Alarm LCD display. You can actually use the massage feature to gently wake you up. Unless you live in California- because earthquakes can make you feel youre on a cheap motel bed with the quarters worth of massage going. I tend to sleep through most earthquakes now, unless they make national news and promise tsunami threats. So a gentle massage alarm wont work for me. It might for you.
Safety Features
Some people have small cats, dogs and kids. While there shouldnt be any concern about any of the above being under the base units no matter if the bed is stationary or raising or lowering, as a safety measure, the Simmons Adjustable Bed comes with SafeZone Technology. An infrared ray and infrared eye are inside the head of the 2 twin base units. These units detect movement from any warm-blooded creature, stop the downward motion and reverse the motion of the bed upwards for 4 seconds. Unfortunately this does not work for snakes and other cold-blooded creatures. (Sorry folks in Florida, Snakes and Alligators won’t cause the unit to stop its downward momentum.)
Whats not to like?
I dont like that you cant flip or rotate the mattress. After a years use, we do have 2 discernable dents in the Beautyrest mattress.
The King top-mattress is 12 thick, and there isnt the same definition of the raised leg section as a 7 or 8 mattress would have. The raised leg area doesnt feel that much higher, even at its highest level. It only feels as if you had put a pillow under your calves. The raised head section works just fine, putting you in a comfortable 45 degree setting for watching television or reading but, if you want your cup of tea, youve been raised 33 away from your nightstand.
And finally, with the frame, base units and top mattress, the bed is now 30 off the ground. I had to get a step stool for my Pomeranian to get on the bed hes not supposed to be on but wants to be on in the winter months. It was the step stool, or hear him yelp at 3am when the poor, old, ½ blind, arthritic dog missed the high jump event.
My recommendation
Even with the faults, I still love the bed. Weve had several occasions when the purpose to which it was originally bought came into play. My spouse had a pinched nerve in his neck flare up, preventing him from working at a desk. Sitting up in bed, head supported by pillows, and a laptop on a bed-tray, he was able to work without much discomfort. I also injured a hip joint last fall, and had to spend a couple days in bed with orders to keep my legs raised. This was easy with my new bed.
I do not miss the wireless unit with all its extra whistles and bells, Im happy with the hardwired hand controller we have. It performs all the functions I need:
