Ahh, mattresses; the word brings to mind sheer comfort, sweet dreams and awakening refreshed and ready to start the day. You imagine yourself floating in solitary splendor that can never be equaled by anything else.
Then you wake up to the real world and find out that the mattress you own is nothing but sheer torture.
My old mattress was the most comfortable mattress I had ever owned until a back injury. I had gone to physical therapy, doctors, surgeons and getting no relief. They all stated that my old bed was too soft and I needed another one. Something that was firm, something that would offer more support than the bed I was already sleeping on.
Now came the time to do a search, we checked out Simmons, Sealy, and Serta. This is not easy task, going from store to store, trying out the different models and asking questions. I had another obstacle also, my back wasnt well from the injury that I received so getting on and off the beds made it rough.
My husband asked if there was a thirty day free trial so that we could fully evaluate the mattress as just a few minutes in the store will not give you the full story. The stores that we went to all stated that they didnt offer such a deal.
After days of going to stores and going back to stores
it was time to make a decision and we decided on the Serta Perfect Sleeper Heatherfield Cushion Firm in king size. In fact we not only bought the mattress and box springs, we bought a whole bedroom set.
The king sized mattress set came with the split box springs along with the mattress. This is something that we really wanted. In the past we have had mattress sets that dipped in the middle or had a hump. Almost an invisible wall and no one could sleep there as it was way uncomfortable. With the split springs, there is less dipping.
With the spit box springs, it is easier to get into the house and bedrooms especially if you have very sharp corners to turn.
What we liked about the Serta Perfect Sleeper Heatherfield Cushion Firm is the fact that they stated it would not sag on the sides after years of getting in and out of the bed. If you are like us, we sit on the side of the bed putting our shoes on every morning so that would lead to a sagging problem also. Our Golden Retriever also hangs over the side of the bed to check out what is going on on the floor. That is extra pressure on the sides.
The company also stated there was head to toe support to help prevent roll together. After three years, we still dont roll together in the middle of the bed.
The box springs offer triple beam support, what this is is three layers of lumber to help make if strong so in areas that might sag, this has the extra support.
The mattress has a beautiful tone-on-tone cotton jacquard cover. The mattress and box springs are both covered in this and it even looks nice if you didnt have time to place sheets on them before company drops by.
The mattress has “tempered coils for greater resiliency and support” according to Serta. With about 900 coils there isnt a spot that is missed.
Now this sounds like a dream set doesnt it? Wrong, the Serta Perfect Sleeper Heatherfield Cushion Firm is the most uncomfortable set I have ever slept on. Both my husband and I wake up every morning with a backache. It takes us about a half an hour just to get moving.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper Heatherfield Cushion Firm boast of having Pillo-Fill fibers and soft convoluted Serta Foam provide a comfortable sleep surface directly from them. This is supposed to be 13 inches thick. If its there, I sure dont feel it.
When lying on your side, the only thing that is supported are your shoulders and hips. You can slide your hand under the area where your waist is.
If you lay on your back, the upper back and hip area are the only area supported. You can once again slide your had under where your waist is. This isnt comfortable at all. You find yourself tossing and turning just to get a spot that is halfway comfortable.
We have three egg crates on the bed right now just to get a little cushion. When this said firm, we didnt realize that it would be like sleeping on a hard concrete surface. We avoided the extra firm because we knew this would be too hard of a surface. You even wake up with your skin sore.
Both hubby and I wake up tired like we havent had any rest at all. The maximum time that either one of us can spend in the bed is six hours. Anything past that is nothing but torture.
If you have had surgery or been told to stay in bed because of an illness, this isnt the bed to have. You are more uncomfortable than if you stayed in your recliner. If you are an arthritis sufferer then avoid the Serta Perfect Sleeper Heatherfield Cushion Firm like the plague.
To try and soften the mattress, I have jumped on the bed, stomped, and punched and still it does’t soften. If my kids would have seen me, they would have fainted from shock. Rock hard is what this is.
The recommendation for turning the mattress is once a month. I gave that up a long time ago as One person can’t do it because the mattress is so heavy. I thought that with less turning, things would get softer. Didn’t happen here.
I guess I could have saved my $1,200 and slept on the floor for all the comfort that this thing gives.
I can not in all good conscience recommend this set to anyone. Even though it has never sagged anywhere in three years, it is the most uncomfortable set I have ever owned.
For Christmas this year, hubby and I are giving each other a new set.
