Craftmatic: the best bed in the world. Or so they claim in their brochures.
Actually, the quality is worse than the cheapest of all cheap foam mattresses. After-sales care: non-existent. Cost: exorbitant — even after the “special price” the salesman will make for you. After 3 years of battling Craftmatic, and only after the intervention of Trading Standards, they delivered a replacement, a so-called “latex” mattress 8 weeks ago, in Dec.2001. Within 2 days (yes, days) of sleeping on it, there was visible indentation in the mattress where my weight had been. I am not exactly the world’s heaviest person — 5′4″ and 125lb …
They are refusing to refund me the cost of the bed, having successfully dragged the issue out for almost 3 years by not answering letters, not responding to calls, and generally prevaricating.
My first successful attempts at contacting them were met with assurances that all quality mattresses merely need a settling-in period: when I then called six months later (one year and one week after purchasing the thing) and explained that it was STILL unsatisfactory and indeed was exacerbating my back problems, not making them better, the “customer care” person sneered “well, you’ll have a hard time proving THAT in court.”
As to why I was so STUPID as to buy it: I have a chronic, somewhat disabling, illness, the salesman was high-pressure and ever-so-plausible: and I was gullible enough to part with almost a third of my annual income under the assurances that this is the world’s best bed and would help my recovery!
