Several years ago, we came to the conclusion that it was time to part with our old mattress and box springs. Gee, at that point we had only had it 30 years. No wonder we were getting a rotten nights sleep! However, we decided that since we were going to move, we would WAIT until the house sold…..you know, kind of a celebration. That was a very long two years!
First of all, I suffered from real sticker shock when we went out shopping for a new mattress. The best looking and thickest always were right when you came in the door at the bed stores. Yikes! Could it really be $3000 plus for a new mattress. Well, we roamed around, tried a few of them out, and decided to wait another month when we would be actually in our new home.
It was a couple of days before our furniture arrived, so we went serious bed shopping. There were about four stores that I had decided to visit, but first I wanted to stop at the local furniture store and see what they had. They actually were having a sale. It wasn’t one of those fake “sales” where you have pretend you are buying a car, but a genuine reduction in price. Since we were looking for a king size, my eyes immediately checked out the prices for this size. Oh! There was a King Koil, pillow top, for $899. That was a good price, because another one I had looked at in the bed store was $1600, but they would let me “have their best price” of $1100.
My husband doesn’t like to lie down on beds in public. Kind of silly, but I made him try this King Koil out. He said it was fine, and I loved it, so $899 for a king, delivery included, and we have no sales tax in Montana, the whole package was priced right.
The real test was going to be the first night we slept on it. Since it was a pillow top, it was higher than the 32 year old one and it seemed like I needed to get a ladder to get up there. But, once I got comfortable, I slept like a baby. Although the mattress is nice and firm, the pillow top gave you kind of a deceptive feeling. It took me several nights to decide if it was really firm or not. The final decision was the excellent support system gave you the soft feeling, but still firm. My conclusion that this was the right bed was based on several things:
1. I never wake up at night anymore. Actually I have trouble getting up, it is so comfortable.
2. I am not aware of the moving around by my husband while he sleeps.
3. I do not feel stiff and “old” when I wake up.
These factors to a good night’s sleep are really important, and if you are not sleeping well, it may very likely be your mattress.
King Koil mattresses have received the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval every year since 1988. It is also Endorsed by the International Chiropractors Association. Those recommendations are well earned in my opinion.
A few features of this new purchase is a good firm edge all the way around, double pillow top (should be reversed every few weeks) coil designed somewhat independent so you have less movement on the bed.
King Koil makes a good product. We are pleased, and I will say that the best test is how well we finally sleep at night!
UPDATE JANUARY 2003: We have had considerable problems with this mattress sagging. Also, we have had nothing but grief from the company. They do not stand behind the ten year non prorated warranty.
