Our house is often filled with a revolving door of kids, with a sleepover taking place nearly every weekend. I finally figured out why the neighborhood kids like it at our house. The comfortable twin-size AeroBed makes sleepovers quite cushy. Where my kids have to deal with thin sleeping bags and hard floors in other homes, our house becomes a war zone whenever there’s more than one kid sleeping over. The only way to resolve the issue of who gets the AeroBed is the classic “rock, paper, scissors” battle.
I snagged the light blue AeroBed for $55, with some coupons shaving off the original $69 price. I had a lot of apprehensions about buying an air mattress, especially with visions of three kids jumping up and down on it. Fifty five buckaroos is a lot of dough to hand out so that the neighbor kids wouldn’t have to count sheep.
So the big rule was announced before the AeroBed even escaped the box. “No jumping, no walking, no horseplay on this air mattress!” I have learned to inflate the mattress just before bedtime and deflate it as soon as they get up. One cannot trust a sugar-filled kid on overdrive past their bedtime.
The AeroBed comes equipped with a unique air compressor that inflates the mattress in less than 60 seconds. The compressor is placed on the valve attached to the mattress, the cord plugs into the outlet and a twisting motion with the wrist locks the compressor and turns it on. Once the mattress is inflated to the firmness of your liking, you simply untwist the compressor and close the valve and you’re ready to hit the sack.
The original AeroBed was covered entirely in a plastic-like vinyl. The newer versions have a velvet-like covering on the top layer, with vinyl on the sides and the bottom. We use a mattress cover and regular twin size sheets for this bed.
When morning arrives, it is literally a snap to deflate the AeroBed. Release the tab on the valve and the entire valve pops open and the bed deflates quickly. The twin size bed folds up nicely into a 12-inch high cube and can be easily stored in a closet or on a shelf. Most AeroBeds come equipped with a carrying bag, however, the one I purchased did not.
It has been nearly a year later and I’ve read some Epinions showing that others have had trouble with the beds leaking air. Mine is holding up perfectly so far, and I’ve been very pleased with the product. One caution, if you pack it for travel, make sure you remember to bring the compressor. The product is useless without the compressor and there is no ideal way to inflate the AeroBed without the patented piece of equipment.
Another handy use of this product: when the hubby is in the doghouse, at least he has a bed to sleep on.
