THE PURCHASE:

In September 2005, I purchased a King Size DeluxBed by Tempur-Pedic. It has a depth of 10″, 2″ more than the ClassicBed. I bought king size sheets that are suppose to fit 10″-15″ depth mattresses, and they are a little big. I have to tuck part of the sides of the sheets up under the mattress.

The mattress ($2400), 2 twin box springs ($400) (Tempur-Pedic states that any foundation, other than theirs, may not provide a proper foundation and can void the warranty), waterproof mattress pad ($100–I’m guilty of eating & drinking in bed.), and bed frame $60–I had a queen bed frame at home) and tax totaled about $3000 at a local furniture store. (FYI: I purchased the mattress pad because it offers a 10 year warranty against stains. If you do stain the mattress, they will clean or replace the mattress. Worth it’s weight in gold, if you ask me!) Two men delivered and set it up in a matter of minutes. My mattress was 10 years old, and I have a bad back. So, it was time to make a new mattress purchase.

The Tempur-Pedic mattress is made of Viscoelastic. It claims to “know” how far to let you sink into it, resulting in your body having support at pressure points. This material is suppose to return to its original shape after you release pressure (like roll over or get up). I think it lives up to these claims. It has NASA’s Certified Space Technology seal which means it is “the direct result of technology developed for space programs, or advances and improvements in such technology.” http://www.spaceconnection.org/

It comes with a 10 year full warranty and an additional 10 year limited warranty that prorates the return based on how long you have had it. You can read the warranty here http://www.tempurpedic.com/tempurcmsvb/warranty/swedish_sleep.aspx

DOWNSIDES:

I would like to get the only downsides (aside from price) I personally experienced out of the way. I hurt my back a year ago, and I got the mattress in hopes that it would help support my back. Well, it does. However, I sleep so soundly that I do not move at all, and that causes my back to stiffen up. However, I wasn’t doing much better on a regular mattress; and, I’ll trade a stiff back for a solid sleep any sleepless day or night! The other downside I experienced is that it is hard to roll over in it once you are settled into your spot for the night.

REQUIRED BREAK-IN PERIOD:

If purchased from the factory, you get a 90 day trial period. You have to sleep on it for a 2 week break-in period, and you can return it any time after that up to 90 days from purchase date–at their expense, for a full refund. I purchased mine from a local furniture retailer. They offered a 30 day break in period and any time between days 31-60, it could be exchanged for another mattress of equal value. (They want to make sure they can keep your money…hee hee)

It is a good thing you have a required break in period. After the first night of sleeping on it, I was ready to take it back. My boyfriend, however, was sold. You see, we were sleeping on a mattress that I’d had for 10 years…8 of which, I was sleeping in it alone. So, it had a cozy “cubby” that perfectly fit my body–right in the middle of the mattress. My boyfriend was not partial to this, he would roll to the middle. I was fine with it, because I was usually in the middle. haha So, I was so use to being safely nestled into my mattress. The Tempur-Pedic is quite firm when you first lie on it. As you lie there, it conforms to your body and supports pressure points. But it definitely does not cradle you, as I am partial to in a mattress. So, it took me a few weeks to adjust, and (even though he liked it after the first night) it took my boyfriend a few days to completely adjust to the firmness.

THE SLEEP EXPERIENCE:

With this mattress, I do not move at all while sleeping. This is a nice change from my usual nights of tossing & turning and waking up several times throughout my sleep period. However, this is not 100% beneficial. I hurt my lower back in October 2004, and not moving during the night resulted in my waking up stiffer than usual. I’ve read similar complaints about this mattress from others with back problems. However, I had to weigh my options…a solid night’s sleep or a stiff back for about an hour in the morning. I’ll take a sound sleep any time.

In December of 2005, I had a spinal fusion surgery. I tried sleeping on it for a couple of days after coming home. The way the mattress conforms to my body is slightly painful right now, as I can’t handle my spine moving, yet. As a result, I have not been able to sleep on the mattress any more than those couple of days. However, I don’t think I could sleep on any mattress during this recovery period. So, I’ve been sleeping on the sofa, which is firmer and restricts my movement…unless I want to fall on the floor. I am, however, looking forward to returning to the bed a.s.a.p.

HEAT & SMELLS:

Some people complain of excessive heat retention with the mattress. The mattress uses your body heat to soften, and this is how it conforms to you. Neither my boyfriend or I have this complaint. Both of us are hot sleepers. So, I do not understand how neither of us are affected by heat retention. Especially since we live in a pretty darn warm climate in Las Vegas. In addition to that, I was sleeping on a heating pad for a while. (It shuts off after an hour.) I still was not waking up hot &/or sweaty.

Also, the salesman warned us of an unusual smell on the mattress that would dissipate over time. I’ve also read of complaints by others that have purchased the mattress that they were bothered by the smell. However, again, a complaint that neither of us had. We did not notice any unusual smells on the mattress.

ADDITIONAL PROS:

You don’t have to flip the mattress…ever! This is a good thing because I was lucky to remember to flip my mattress every year-year and a half.

The mattress is quiet. When my boyfriend gets out of bed, I don’t hear squeaks and creaks like I did with my old mattress.

There is very little motion transfer. You don’t feel the movement of others in the bed. I used to wake up with every little move that my boyfriend made. Now, he can get up and down all night…heck, he can jump up and down on it if he wants…I’m sleeping through it all.

SUMMARY:

So, overall, I would say I am happy with the mattress. I’m not hot, I sleep solid and can live with the morning stiff back, and it is pretty comfie after getting use to the firmness. As far as justifying the cost, a 20 year limited warranty works for me. I know a lot of people speak of what a pain it is to get the warranty to cover permanent indentations. But if they are going to offer such an extensive warranty, I figure they have to be pretty strict about honoring it.

I would say the main questions to ask yourself are:

-Am I willing to pay this for a mattress?

-Can I tough it through a trial period to see if I can adjust to it?

…and if you do,

-Do I notice overheating while sleeping on it?

-Is it causing me unbearable pain?

-Do I sleep better and more soundly?

-Do I mind going through trials and tribulations to cash in on the warranty, if need be?

I hope this helps you in deciding whether or not to make a purchase. I know it boils down to individual opinions, and you will have to try it out to know for sure. Also, read more reviews. Some people love the mattress for a couple of years and then complain of discomfort. So, do your homework, and be patient during the trial period. If I weren’t, I would have definitely returned it within the first couple of weeks.
