As I recently moved to Japan I have been sleeping on the futons which are traditional here. I absolutely love them, but my guests were constantly complaining about the aches and pains they experienced. So I asked some friends of mine to send me over an air mattress for times when I had company visit.
The air mattress has an automatic pump which takes 4 D batteries and takes about 15 minutes to inflate. There is also an option of using a hand pump to inflate, this takes from 20- 25 minutes. I liked having the option of inflation and in fact this is the best (and only redeemable feature of this product!).
The insta-bed has many horizontal grooves on its surface. These are quite large grooves and and it felt as though I was sleeping on an uneven surface. Both the bottom and top of the air mattress is elevated when inflated. I think this was supposed to act as a pillow (for the top half) but was very uncomfortable. My head was at least 3 inches above the rest of the air mattress and when I wanted to use a pillow this made it so my head was even more diagonal. While me head is being elevated my feet were also elevated (a foot pillow?). Feeling as though I were on a bed which folds in half that was folded halfway down.
I used the air mattress for three nights to try it out and then my first guests arrived and then I realized the noise level it produced. Whenever, you turn even the slightest bit you rub the mattress and it produces a sound of friction. When you get up you also make a tremendous noise. Living in Japan and having rice paper walls makes this noise very noticeable. My guests after spending one night on the mattress asked to use futons because a)they also found it uncomfortable and b) were aware of the loud level of noise they were creating.
However, this was not the biggest problem I had, after my third guest arrived (sixth time in use). The air mattress started losing air. It would not keep air in it for longer than 3 hours. So I contacted Eddie Bauer and they informed me that they take no responsibility for their products. The store which sells the product is liable and because they have so many different factories (partners) making their products they no longer give any type of warranty. So after six uses, I now have a useless hunk of vinyl.
Do not waste your money on this product!
