Mattress Base

My old queen-size mattress was sagging badly, and I knew I needed to replace it (although I was very comfortable in it). It normally takes me 3 nights to start to sleep well on a "strange" mattress, whether travelling or at Mom’s house. My first night on my Simmon’s Backcare Signature pillow-top mattress set was practically identical to any other night; I was immediately comfortable.

Since this set is thicker than my old mattress set, the bed then seemed to fill up my bedroom much more than before, but I’m used to that now (2 1/2 years later). I’m faithfully turning it as suggested, keeping a 3X5 record card in the nightstand so as not to forget the timing of turns.

UPDATE

After owning this mattress for five years we are ready to throw it out a window, it has deformed with huge crevice in the center of the mattress. We faithfully flipped this monstrously heavy mattress every couple of months, it is just a defective design.

We loved this mattress for the first year, but it hasn’t stood the test of time, choose a non-flip mattress with more support. Good luck

My wife and I have been sleeping on a queen-sized pillow top mattress for the last four years. We began to realize that we did not have enough space and it was affecting our sleep.

I bought this mattress for a camping trip and I must say the first night it provided superior comfort. However, the next night it was useless. It didn’t even come close to making to the morning. The product was not abused in the least bit and I only weigh 190lbs so the weight limit was not exceeded. I exchanged the mattress for the same model assuming I had a dud, but the same thing happened with the new one after a couple nights of normal use. I was dumb enough to give Coleman another try and exchanged the mattress again. Once again, I found myself on the ground. A friend of mine had the same luck with his so I know I wasn’t abusing or misusing the product.

About 2 years ago I purchased a tempurpedic mattress from Brookstone. I had been thinking about this for quite a while, but after my wife consistently had back pains after waking up we decided we needed to try something different than a regular mattress.

The top contenders were the tempurpedic and Select Comfort - both were “different” from the traditional type of mattresses. I was talking to my manager and he said he recently bought a Select Comfort and really liked it, but had some problems with the pump. As we were talking, somebody else heard us and stopped in to talk about his tempurpedic.

My wife and I bought this bed because we both suffer from back pain. We decided that we would buy the best bed possible, basically money was no object if it would help us.

After looking at numerous conventional beds, we went to a Select Comfort store. I will say they do an excellent job of marketing their product. They have a book with many endorsements from numerous stars, as well as letters from many satisfied customers praising the greatness of this bed.

The salesmen are very convincing and helpful, too. But the first thing to be aware of is that all the beds in the show room are kings. I think this is deceptive. We bought a queen because it fit a nice bed frame and bedroom set we already had. We’ve always slept on queens before without a problem. But on one of these beds you have a 4 inch foam liner on the outside of the mattress so your actually sleeping surface is a lot smaller then a conventional queen. You’re basically sleeping on about a 24 inch wide air mattress, too small for a big guy like me. So if you buy one of these beds, DO NOT get anything smaller then a king! I always felt like a was rolling off the bed because once you get off the center of the air mattress, that’s what happens!

Their return policy only covers the mattress and normal base. We decided to go all the way and get the “Precision Comfort Adjustable Foundation ” with the massager. Well you CAN’T return that. They say that’s due to its “unique shipping requirements ” and that it can be used for other mattresses. Well, most mattresses use a box spring base and this base is just a piece of 3/4 inch plywood on a power adjustable metal frame, so I don’t know how that would work with a conventional mattress?

In addition, my wife suffers from multiple chemical sensitivity, and the chemicals in the foam and materials caused her to have some bad reactions and get sick.

We tried and tried to get used to this bed for 2 months, but finally gave up. It wasn’t helping our backs at all, in fact I feel they were getting worse.

We contacted Select Comfort and asked if we could return the bed even at a discounted price but were told no. I know it was after their 30 day return window, but I was hoping they would take it back and at least give us part of our money back. We paid over $4,000 for this thing and now can’t use it.

I realize now I should of done a lot more research before I put out this much money. If you’re thinking of getting one of these beds, go some place like a motel that has one and try it out for a night. Talk to people that have one. And DO NOT buy anything smaller than a KING!

To read the marketing material surrounding these beds one would think that this bed would be a cure-all. In fact the opposite is true. To clarify the core material which is utilized in "Swedish Foam" beds is not Proprietary to anyone manufacturer. It was developed by the space program and such remain public domain. As a result many companies have entered into the market selling swedish foam beds with little separating them other than the quantity of foam utilized. Tempurpedic is of course the most widely recognized name in this market. Being manufactured in Denmark and Sweden this company is the leader in sales of this bedding surface. The material has the consistency of bubblegum. And as such it reacts much the same way bubblegum would when encountering temperature changes. Abed and others will state that the bedroom should be maintained at a temperature of 60+ degrees. Ideally 65 degrees. Anything lower and the bed will become very stiff almost like wood. Even at room temp the bed is flexible but not soft. As your body heat transfer to the bedding surface the bed retains the heat and becomes significantly more pliable and supple. In short order it will conform to the contours of your body. Once your body sinks into the material it will reach a foundation layer of foam. This layer is not designed to conform as much as the surface layer. It is this layer which allows for some level of support. I found that the bed had a tendency to retain to much heat, and could make for a rather uncomfortable sleep. Also if you are an active sleeper you will likely find that the bed is slow to return to its original state when you move. Again this is a bit uncomfortable.

After a long day at work, the last thing I need is to lay in the bed and drop my head on the pillow, only to have the sides blow up like two balloons, engulfing my ears and leaving my head laying flat on the mattress. After purchasing my Isotonic Memory Foam Pillow, those days are gone. Okay, not all pillows are as bad as the ones I just described, but I have a propensity for buying the two for five dollar pillows at Wal-Mart. And what I just described is exactly what you get when you spend a couple of dollars on a pillow.

We got our sleep number a week ago. We purchased it because we have been sleeping on our regular spring mattress for 7 years now and we noticed we were sleeping poorly. I have seen the commercials on it for quit some time now and thought it looked like a good buy. We have some friends that purchased a sleep number a year ago and they swear by it, so we went to the nearest show room to check it out. The sales man was very helpful and I was impressed by the bed right away. On the other hand I was leery to purchase it because of some of the opinions people had about it. Either people love the bed or hate the bed. We figured all we had to loose was the money to ship it back, so we went for it. We opted to have our bed shipped UPS and set it up ourselves since we figured we would get it sooner and we did!! The salesman figured it would take about two weeks to get it and to our surprise it took only three days…..VERY HAPPY about this since anyone purchasing something this big would rather have it right away, right!! It was fairly easy to put together, it took about an hour. So far I love it, not so sure my husband is sold on it though. I am however concerned about the mold issues people have and it is a little hotter than I would like but I chalk that up to the fact that it really doesn’t have the ability to breath. I am concerned we wouldn’t notice mold within the 30 night trial period,and from my understanding mold isn’t part of the warranty. Now that I have chosen my sleep number, I do find I have more energy in the morning, although, I hate to get out of bed now!

I’ve owned this mattress for at least 15 years, and it’s still in excellent shape, and shows absolutely no sign of wear. It’s retained it’s shape perfectly, with no low spots or depressions. The cover and quilting are also in great shape, and show no signs of wear.

When we got married in 1989, my husband also had a mattress. It was some “off” brand he’d bought it locally here in Reno, only a couple of years before we were married. It was absolutely awful! After only two or so years, it developed depressions and dents, and gave terrible support. I was surprised it didn’t last very long, I thought mattresses lasted “forever.” My parents had Serta’s, and they really did have them for decades. So, we got rid of my husband’s mattress, and kept my Serta. It’s been an excellent mattress, and shows no signs of deterioration.

This review was written when we first got this mattress about five months ago. I have updated certain things in this review to reflect any changes that may have occured, but for the most part, we still love this mattress as much as when we first got it.
