My husband and I slept for our first eight years together on a semi-waveless waterbed. It was great until it began causing my husband some lower back discomfort. We tried a Serta waterbed insert (standard mattress without boxspring designed to fit into a waterbed frame) and it was like sleeping on a concrete slab. We lasted exactly two nights on that bad boy. We then purchased a very nice pillow top serta perfect sleeper. It was OK for about a year, but then my husband’s back started bothering him again. I had done some research on Tempurpedics, and we thought about it for a while before deciding to take the plunge. The concept seemed legitimate enough, and true to our typical form, we ordered the top of the line deluxe 10 inch queen model. We even purchased a new European flat panel frame so we wouldn’t need to mess with the foundation. We obviously didn’t research the “cons” thoroughly enough. The mattress arrived about two weeks after we ordered it. The guys came in and dropped it into the frame (yeah, the free “set up” is quite a deal!) and we were in business. The first night, my husband was playing around and went to dive onto the bed and I think he hurt himself because it was like landing on a brick. (Don’t try this at home!) We climbed in the bed and it was hard as a rock. I have never had back problems but after three or four nights on this bed I began experiencing lower back problems and tingling sensations in my arms and hands. I came to dread bedtime because this bed was sooo uncomfortable. We wanted it to work out so badly. We tried it for about 60 days until I finally decided I was going to sleep in our old bed (now in the guest room) until “the rack” was gone and replaced. (I didn’t experience any of the heat problems I have read about, of course we used the mattress in Wisconsin during December and January! I did find it difficult to change sleep positions once I was “settled in” though, as many other people state.) I called customer service expecting some major hassle but the rep was extremely nice and helpful. Within a week the mattress was picked back up and gone. I was charged $150 for the shipping but that’s fine. It is better than being stuck with a $2100.00 bed that we can’t use.
Update: Two things I forgot to mention. On the positive side, my husband and I found this bed to be great for, shall we say, OOTS (operations other than sleeping). On the negative side, this thing was HEAVY, HEAVY! Just changing the sheets was a major ordeal. I think they offer that free in home set up for a reason. Unless you are a body builder or prefessional furniture mover, you aren’t going far with this thing. You should have seen the two of us (me at 5′2 and 120 lbs) trying to move it just out of one room and into another so the new bed could replace it. (Heck, getting it out of the drop in frame was chore enough!) We were like the two stooges! It was pretty funny later, but not at the time! (Don’t worry, if sleeping on this bed doesn’t cream your back, changing sheets and trying to move it totally will!)
