Allowing that your sleeping comfort on various mattresses is a very individual thing, my wife and I checked (and “slept”) around many local mattress dealers to find the perfect fit for us.
It came in the form of a Sealy Posturepedic Firm model (called Havelock Firm FR at Mattress Discounters) - since different retailers use different names to make it harder for you to compare, just call 1-800-Mattress and they’ve got the name for every retailer for every mattress they sell - they call the model Napoleon - 5/2005 selling for $799 mattress only, $1159 set). So, best bet is to go to a local store, find what you like, take down their branding name for the bed along with coil count, thickness, types of padding, call 1-800-Mattress, see what their best deal is - were you being taken or was the local retailer giving you a fair price ?
For us, the retailer was giving a fair price - $100 less, with no sales tax and no delivery charge. More important to me was the 60-day comfort guarantee. Unfortunately 1-800-Mattress offered only a 15-day comfort exchange (add $59 to exchange with them). It really does take a few weeks to know if a bed is going to be right for you - it takes your body that long to adjust to the new support (as more than likely you’re replacing your old mattress because it quit supporting you, perhaps long ago). So it meant alot to us to have someone locally with a written guarantee as long as 60 days.
We’d tried Tempur-pedic beds, which felt really nice in the show room, but they were a bit on the pricey side, well, actually twice the cost of the bed we bought - and on top of that, I’m not sure being a “hot sleeper” I could adjust to it’s heat trapping properties in the long run. I’ll never know, because I didn’t go down that path.
However, having tried the Tempur-pedic, and then finding the Sealy Posturpedic Queen 782 coil with 1/2 inch memory foam, I realized after awhile it was just that small layer of memory foam that was making the difference for me. I think they might as well call it Magic Foam, because it allows my wife the comfort and support she likes in a firm mattress and yet myself, likely a softer feel, find the 1/2 inch memory foam layer just enough to take the firm edge off and yet give me proper support as well, as I weigh about 100 lbs more than my wife.
In the end, I think if you give this mattress a try at your local dealer, and compare, you’ll find it a good value with a full 10 year replacement warranty.
